my thoughts on fairytales after the reading this week have changed. before the reading in class and also in general I thought fairy tales were cute and innocent stories for children to look at. However, after doing some research on my own and also readings in class I found that these stories are a bit dark or at least have a darker origin and contain a lot of things that wouldn’t be ok if told and promoted in media now. for example when reading the snow white story it was mentioned that for revenge snow white and the prince made the evil queen dance with hot shoes on until she died.in terms of things being unacceptable by today’s standards in the story snow white also mentioned that the prince wanted to take snow white back with him despite not knowing her. noticing these things in the story made me think about how many other stories have weird or dark origins and how they have changed the stories to make them more marketable for today’s standards.

I totally get what you mean! Before our readings and discussions, I used to think of fairytales as just sweet, innocent stories for kids. However, diving into them deeper, especially with Snow White, showed me they’re actually pretty dark and not exactly what I thought. Like, in the original stories, things happen that wouldn’t fly today. The whole hot shoes punishment and the prince wanting to take Snow White without really knowing her are kinda weird by today’s standards. It makes me wonder how many other stories have these dark origins.
Hi Paola I completely agree with you, It’s remarkable how to discover the darker origins of fairytales and how they’ve been adapted over time and in broad of escenarios, recognizing these aspects can change how we view and perspectives of these stories, especially It’s interesting to think about how societal standards have evolved and influenced the way these tales are portrayed over time. Your idea highlight the complexity behind what we once saw as simple children’s stories.
I completely agree that these fairytales may cover their more darker meanings into a more colorful and magical setting that children may not be able to understand for example but for others they will see that something is up and these fairytales aren’t so light hearted stories that are being told. It makes you wonder if other stories we grow up with like Cinderella, Mulan, or the Little Mermaid, what types of hiding meaning do these stories have.
