I would rate my ability to read and understand Oedipus the King, as mildly efficient. I understood the beginning very easily, but the ending got very confusing. I did enjoy reading the play because it is different and interesting. However, the elements of Oedipus towards the end were very confusing. This was confusing because the lines got shorter and harder to comprehend. When we were in class and we broke down the lines, understanding every word and part of the lines helped with my confusion. If I could pick a character to portray if I had to be in a production of the play, I would be Creon. I would choose him because he seemed content with what he had. Unlike Oedipus, who was very short-tempered and oblivious to his own murder. I think the best character was Creon, even if I had to become King, I would still choose Creon. He would be a good leader and be happy.

Sanaya, thanks for the informative comments. I agree that Creon seems much more rationale and calm than Oedipus. It’s interesting that in the second play of the trilogy, we see that he isn’t a good king at all. He seems to lack the compassion and passion of Oedipus and rules strictly by the letter of the law. I’m glad to hear that breaking down the lines helped. Sometimes I feel students will get bored/irritated by my interruptions.
Hi Sanaya!! I was reading your post and I had to leave you a comment because I felt the same way about that ending lol. I was like “huh, is this it?” Because as you also said, the beginning was detailed, they explained what was happening in the city with the plague and everything. However, when we got to the ending I felt like the story needed more details so us as readers could understand better what happened.
Hi Sanaya, your post really caught my eye because I agree it was easy reading it at first and they it just got harder to really understand the gist of what was going on . I also agree that you have to break down the lines in order to understand. Also one more thing if I had to choose a second character to be my choice would’ve been Creon because doesn’t really act based of emotion like most people do .
Hi Sanaya, I also felt the same way you did about reading this play, The beginning was easy to understand but the ending was indeed more difficult to understand. I glad Professor Conway broke down the lines for us. This made it much easier to understand and to enjoy reading it. I too would want to portray Creon, because he did seem more content and happier with what he had. He would be a better leader and happier. I would rather be the type of leader then Oedipus who obviously wasn’t happy.
