A Chat GTP-generated essay on “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara would probably discuss economic disparity, lack of equal opportunity, racial inequity, and other broad social issues. If I were to write an essay about “The Lesson,” I would name it “The Unknown Path.” I would call it this because Miss Moore had taken them on that trip to the store to show them this world beyond the world they live in. This gave them options and things to think about for their sake. Our narrator doesn’t seem fond of Miss. Moore even though most do. In “The Lesson,” Miss Moore takes them to a place where it is challenging to watch, but not touch. I think this is perfect for students because upon getting there, they wanted everything. However, the prices changed their minds. Our narrator seems threatened that everything is out of reach. She missed the lesson, which was one day you could be buying whatever you want. “The Lesson” gives a powerful, “You can do whatever you put your mind to ” mentality.

Sanaya, I like this angle you take here. The idea of being brought out of the children’s comfort zone into a world they never knew existed is a really interesting one to explore. That would make a great essay. However, I don’t agree that Sylvia doesn’t “get” the lesson. She, unlike the other children, is resolved at the end to never feel ashamed or out of place again.
Hello Sanaya! I absolutely love your choice of title. I feel like the title you chose really captures the essence if the story “The Lesson”. I have said this before, understanding the main idea and or point of the story is so very important if you want to really grasp the message that is being told. I think that what is so special about this story is the power behind miss mores actions. Even tho the young narrator is not fond of her, as you said, Miss Moore’s intentions were completely pure. Even if it wasn’t received as that. Also she leaves a very strong impression on these young adults minds. I feel that is is great that this lesson was taught to them at the ages that they are because they are still young. It is better to teach them young to mold their minds as opposed to when they are adults and are oblivious to the harsh realities of society. Great work.
