What surprises me in this vignette ” Sire”is the fact that Esperanza witnesses a shocking event as she observes an older man forcibly dragging a young girl into his car. The element of surprise stems from the abrupt and unsettling nature of the incident, stark reminders of the perils and vulnerability experienced by young girls in the neighborhood. In the vignette titled “The Three Sisters”, we are introduced to a trio of elderly sisters who are credited with mystical abilities. Their enigmatic aura and the captivating stories associated with them ignite Esperanza’s imagination and spark readers’ curiosity, allowing for diverse interpretations and a sense of wonder. that’s what intrigues me The vignette titled “Four Skinny Trees”, Esperanza vividly depicts four skinny trees thriving in front of her house. it intrigued me in the sense that these trees serve as a symbol, representing the courage and tenacity of the women of the Esperanza neighborhood. Initially, some readers may find this connection confusing, as the correlation between trees and women may not be immediately obvious. Nevertheless, upon further reflection, the metaphor becomes increasingly transparent and meaningful.

For me the analysis of the work Blanche-Neige by Bettelheim is the one most linked and close to the details presented in the poem written by Anne Sexton. The poem begins with Snow White’s stepmother hiring a hunter to kill her. Bettelheim in his analysis interprets the role of the hunter as “not a figure who slays friendly creatures, but a person who dominates, controls and subdues wild and ferocious beasts”. (Bettelheim page 205). Then in the poem, the purity of Snow White is highlighted by the details of her appearance. The repetition of the color “white” is significant and is even included in the maiden’s name “She was undefiled…beautiful virgin” (Sexton lines 12-14). White representing the symbol of purity, the hunter could not bring himself to kill Snow White. Conversely, he preferred to lie and deceive the mother-in-law by giving her a boar’s heart because her character was associated with that of an animal. Second, the analysis of the naivety of Snow White is another of the observations related to the poem. We tend to associate too much beauty with stupidity. In the poem, despite being given very detailed instructions from the dwarves not to open the door for her safety, she continued to open the door and hurt herself every time. In his analysis Bettelheim, highlights the stereotype that is associated with beauty and its adolescent character. The innocence of the character is incredible because despite the fact that her stepmother wants her dead she still remains clueless about the dangers surrounding her.
The story “Where are you going, where have you been?” is about a fifteen-year-old girl named Connie who goes to meet people who don’t treat her well. The story offers several interpretations of the event, including how awful things can happen in our lives and in our society. The story itself can be seen as a warning to young people about the dangers and terrible things that can happen in America. Connie’s character is portrayed as naive, unaware of the dangers of the world much like all young girls her age. Conversely, the character Arnold Friend is presented here as a nasty character, who hurts and deceives people. In her essay, Rena Korb makes a suggestion that some people may associate the character of Arnold Friend with the image of evil or the consequences of giving up one’s freedom at the hands of someone corrosive. It is a life lesson that aims to warn and warn young people.
As Edward Hirsch so aptly put it in his article “How to Read a Poem”, when approaching an unfamiliar poem, readers tend to make three false assumptions and the one I made was to think that the whole poem was a kind of code where every detail corresponds to a single thing and if I wanted to understand it I had to decipher it. I made this mistake when reading the poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” written by William Butler Yeats in which the author just expresses his desire to find calm and peace by going to live alone on an island <<And I shall have some peace there, for peace slowly descends>>. For me this poem was hiding an unknown meaning and I started looking for it until I applied the literary techniques explained in Edward Hirsch’s article and then I realized my mistake.
1- “Reading a poem is part attitude and part technique. Attitude Technique is also very important for understanding, the repetition of certain words, the rhythm or even the style of language to use can be very useful for understanding and for the emotions that the writer is trying to communicate to us. 2-At the beginning of the reading I was very confused but after having read the poem again and used the literary techniques my approach totally realized all the irony present in William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130 “My Mistress’ Eyes are Nothing Like The Sun”. ‘‘My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips’ red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damasked, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks .’’ Unlike classic poems that highlight the beauty of women using exaggerations, the author does the opposite. He compares the parts of his lover’s body to beautiful objects, but each time he does so one realizes that he is describing his lover’s body as less beautiful than the thing he is comparing it to. For example, he says his eyes aren’t as bright as the sun and his breath isn’t like perfume at all and it “reeks”.
The two poems “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the gift card “Why Do I Love You So Much”, are declarations of love written for loved ones. The sonnet has fourteen lines, while the greeting card has eleven lines. They begin with fairly simple questions that everyone has already had the opportunity to ask themselves. In Browning’s poem we have the presence of the hyperbole “I will love you better after death” which the author uses to reinforce the image of endless and limitless love while in the gift card , the author uses a list to tell us the reasons he loves his partner. The sonnet uses rhyme, formal language, and tone to emphasize what she is trying to communicate. On the other hand, the card simply states the reasons why he/she likes the person, having no tone, rhyme or anything else to grab the audience’s attention and also having a simple language and structure.
Identify the author and literary work you are focusing on for your research essay For my research essay, I will use “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. Please share the verbatim thesis statement of your research essay in your post. In this story, the author talks about the high expectations that come with religion and the growing disappointment caused by not meeting them. 3.Explain what specific type of secondary source information you think will support your thesis. I think the secondary sources that will help support my thesis are the author’s biography which will help me for a better understanding of the story and I will use a literary review for another opinion on the beliefs of the author. Identify the BMCC databases you have explored to date and what the results have been. I used JSTOR and BMCC databases to find secondary sources. And to be honest so far JSTOR has been more useful for my assignment. I found some articles that will help to better understand the author and his experiences.
What surprised me in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is the fact that Louise does not allow herself to be free as a woman even after the announcement of her husband’s death. She resists this awareness by apprehending with fear. But the death of her husband opened her eyes and made her realize many things that she would probably never have discovered if he were still alive. From the moment she accepts the death of her husband, her character evolves and she then allows herself to recognize her freedom, the fear she felt is transformed into excitement and even begins to consider her future where her freedom belongs to her completely. The end of this story completely blew me away because the irony was at its height after the doctors believed that she “died of heart disease – of a joy that kills”. For me this shock was not due to the fact that her husband was alive but rather the fear of losing her freedom which had just been regained.
After reading this story I realized its inner depth. First of all, the story tackles sensitive and controversial subjects that anyone can face early or late in their life, such as racist prejudices or stereotypes. But this text also talks about religion and being human and behaving as such. The more you read, the more you realize that the grandmother has racist prejudices that you can drink through what she says and what she does. But as the story progresses we notice that her behavior changes and this radically transforms her character. She then goes from someone totally blinded by her prejudices about others to someone more empathetic and more open to others. It is then that we approach the last two themes of this reading which are humanism and religion. This story demonstrates humanism is something that can be learned and can change a person. For example, it was by having interacted with The Misfit that she had a clearer vision of what surrounds her and that prejudices are not always true.
The timeless or human behavior that I found in reading Oedipus is that the search for truth can destroy you. At some point in our lives we have all felt powerful and at the top. In this work the author places the character at a time in his life when he is at his peak. He is powerful, loved by all his subjects, by his wife, this could go on for a long time. But the search for the truth will lead to revelations that will cause his downfall. As the plot unfolds we can say that this work alone represents a philosophical reflection on happiness which is something very subjective, power and knowledge. During the time when Oedipus does not know, he is happy and exercises the power entrusted to him by his people. And paradoxically, the closer he gets to the truth, trying to find out who he is, the more he loses himself. He blindly searches for the truth but when it is within his reach he refuses to hear it. Once the truth is revealed, he loses his wife, his family and the power that had been entrusted to him. The search for the truth can do good but also cause the downfall of a person and I find that it is some universe in the experience of being human
The role played by the Chorus is very important. With their chants and songs, the Chorus helps the audience better connect with the characters, immersing us in the essence of the tragedy. “If a man walks arrogantly of hand or word and disregards justice and the shrines of the gods despise – may an evil fate strike him for his evil-starred heart pride! – if he reaps gains without justice and will not hold back impiety and his fingers itch him for untouchable things. When such things are done, what man will manage to shield his soul from the darts of God? When such deeds are held in honor, why should I honor the gods in the dance?” In this passage, Chorus warns the king of his arrogant and stubborn behavior. Yet at the beginning they supported Oedipus based on his past exploits and that he is best placed to repair their misfortunes. But over time, Oedipus’ behavior becomes more tyrannical, and the chorus becomes uncertain and questions what drives him, explaining that a man who pays no attention to justice and temples dedicated to deities risks incurring their anger and that a tragedy will occur if he does not change and no one will come to his aid.

The little boy in this story is the narrator himself. He is currently 12 years old and I find him quite pessimistic for someone his age. He’s more of an honest type and quick to always tell the truth but he doesn’t make it to the end of the story because he doesn’t want to disappoint his aunt and the whole congregation who prays and cries for him. He identifies as someone who is quite down to earth and down to earth. He does not want to lie, as Westley does, and get up simply because he is tired of the mourners’ bench. When he does finally get up, it is because he feels guilty for disappointing his aunt and the congregation, who have been waiting for some time. According to the text and the way he exposes things I can say that he only believes what he sees. in the moment that he stands and is celebrated for having come to God, he is actually experiencing a terrible loss of faith. He no longer believes in Jesus, because Jesus did not come to him in his moment of need.

The story “The Most Handsomest Man That Drowned” is about a drowned man that washed up on the shore of a small village of fishers. The villagers see the man as prosaic and unimpressive. The villagers then set the man up for burial but as they do that they realize how admirable of his looks and appearance they then begin to idealize him. The reason I explained what the story is about in very few words is because it leads to why the professor chose this article as the first read. I believe you chose this article first because its a great example of “magical realism”. Which takes aspects of the combined reality and fantasy into one. Another reason. The story expressed the power of human imagination and the ways in which people can shape their own perceptions and interpretations of reality.
