The act of reading a poem involves more than simply scanning the words on the page. It requires both an appropriate attitude and the technical ability to analyze the poem’s structure and meaning. A reader must approach a poem with an open mind and a willingness to engage with its themes and ideas. At the same time, the reader must have the necessary skills to decode the poem’s language, syntax, and imagery, as well as an understanding of poetic devices such as meter, rhyme, and metaphor. By combining the right mindset and the appropriate techniques, a reader can fully appreciate a poem’s beauty and complexity, unlocking its deeper meanings and insights. My personal experience reading “My Mistress” gave me trouble and led to confusion because of how the author talked about his mistress in the poem led me to believe that he didn’t think too highly of her until the end i assumed that the author was talking in code since i could not understand why would he put other things before his mistress these lines in the poem sounded like little insults for his mistress. “And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks” “I love to hear her speak, yet well I know [10]That music hath a far more pleasing sound”

After reading “White Lies” by Natasha Trethewey, I initially didn’t understand the poem’s deeper meaning. This lack of understanding led me to assume that something was wrong with me or the poem itself. However, upon further reflection and analysis, I came to realize that the poem was exploring the idea of lying as a survival mechanism for people of color in a society where white people hold power and privilege. The speaker in the poem, a young Black girl, quotes “I could easily tell the white folks that we lived uptown, not in that pink and green shanty-fled shotgun section along the tracks. I could act like my homemade dresses came straight out the window of Maison Blanche”. tells white people that she lives in a more affluent area, rather than admitting to living in a poorer neighborhood near the train tracks. The poem also touches on the idea of shame and the internalized racism that can lead people to disavow their own cultural roots. The speaker’s mother punishes her daughter for these lies, “Mama found out. She laid her hands on me, then washed out my mouth with Ivory soap”. Revealing the desire for honesty and authenticity in one’s identity. Overall, the poem explores complex themes of identity, race, and power dynamics, and it takes time and reflection to fully appreciate its significance.

In the story of an hour I was surprised that they lady was happy when her husband was reported dead in a accident. I thought the lady would be sad that now she has to live without her husband and considering she has a heart issues she is probably old so I was surprised to see she was happy and “free” without her husband in her life. I was very intrigued when the lady in the story viewed her husband death as a victory for herself and thought that she was free, I thought this was a weird way for someone to grieve the death of a loved one who recently died. I was puzzled at the end of the story when she had died after finding out her husband was alive and the report was false, I believed that she should of been happy and celebrating his survival because he is her husband but instead she got a heart attack Im sure that also left her husband confused when she suddenly died at the sight of him.
Man is Hard to Find.” The story is indeed a meditation on the nature of evil, the possibility of redemption and the transformative power of grace. The character of the grandmother who initially seems like a shallow and self-centered person, is transformed through the course of the story as she confronts the reality of evil and the limitations of her own worldview the grandmother is forced to confront her own limitations and beliefs. This process is difficult and challenging, and it is characterized by elements of suspense and tension as the family’s encounter with the Misfit becomes increasingly dangerous.. Ultimately, the story shows that even in a world full of bad people, being good will always bring you redemption and will transform your character through humanity grace and empathy and understanding others.

The chorus just sang a prayer to the gods Zues Apollo Athena Artemis describing the horrors they are going through during the plague. They beg for forgive from the gods saying that no one is surviving not even woman and children the Chorus go on to say that the woman can not produce babies because of this plague that is bringing disease and killing everyone. The theme of the plague by the chorus is to make it be known that it is only death and more death that is going on. “Death so many Death” 203-204 the chorus is using the plague and all the dying to try to gather pity and sympathy from the gods they want the gods to spare them. The Chorus wanted to be cured of the plague but was very afraid of what they would have to do in return for having the gods help them. “First I call on you, Athene, deathless daughter of Zeus and Artemis earth upholder” “Our sorrows defy number all the ships timber rotten there are no children and no woman giving birth You may see them one with another, like birds swift on the wing quicker than fire speeding away to the coast of western god”. The chorus describing the plague to the gods.

The two characters I pick are Mercedes and Sugar these characters both had two very different experiences at the high end toy store. In the story Sugar seems like a mischievous young child mostly following her friends lead I even think Sugar and her friend thought about stealing from the Toy Store when they first arrived they were probably joking i dont know. Mercedes acted different from Sugar and her friend Mercedes acted more conceited than her peers and acted like her father would buy her anything she wanted this made her unpopular with Sugar and her friends. The Characters in this story was mostly poor coming from the working class in society Miss Moore was trying to open their eyes on money because Miss Moore thought that working class people should want more of the “pie”. At the start of the story Sugar and her friend was eager to buy or obtain everything in the store until they seen the expensive price tag which led them into a Miss Moore lecture with the store clerk. While Mercedes entered the store window shopping while also bragging to her friends that her father could afford her anything she could want in the store that quickly made the other children not like her and they tried their best to shut her up quickly.
I would describe Langston as a young man who was probably forced to go to church by his aunts and uncles who had encouraged him to submit to Jesus for his own good. I feel this young man in Langston is naive and doesn’t have good judgement since he expected Jesus to come out the shadows or appear in thin air to save him. I think Langston Hughes and his naviety is just a curious young boy who expected Jesus to swoop in and save him like his aunts and uncles said he would. I know Langston is a different person from everyone else who attended the church that day since he was the last one to be saved by Jesus, he just sat there and watched everyone else run off into salvation. Once all the attention in the church was on him he caved into what other people wanted and allowed himself to be saved by Jesus. I think Langston changed when he had not seen Jesus come save him it made him question if Jesus was even real, Langston felt bad because he lied to get out of that tough situation. I think in the end Langston going to church as a “young sinner” looking to be saved by Jesus that day just strained and made him question his ideas and relationship with Jesus since he had not come to save him like everyone said he would.
I think that this story was assigned to show the great change the washed up drowned man brought to the village. The woman took care of the dead man making him new clothes and preparing him for a proper funeral service in their village. The man was so big that it was hard for the woman to accommodate for him and take care of him, the big man brought the whole village together to try to identity who he was, the other men in the village where getting jealous because a dead man was getting all the attention from the woman. The people of the village realized that the man was sincerely and had no control of his giant size so he was ashamed of his troubles for being so big. This changed the whole village the occurrence of this drowned washed up man made the village see how ashamed he was of his size and they made their houses bigger doors wider and taller ceilings so his memory could live on without having to worry about his big awkward size.
