My essay is centered around “The Lesson” By Toni Cade Bambara.
My Thesis: Cade uses the theme of Inequality to showcase the unique reactions of African American children when confronted by the harsh reality of economic disparities in America.
I feel like a Literary critique would be the best secondary source to support my thesis. I’ve looked through JSTOR, Short Story Criticism online, and Gale Literary Resource Center which are all found in the English and Literary section of the BMCC library database. I avoided essays that delve too deep into stories that are not included in my essay but most of the listed sources provide similar bodies of work. I found Gale Literary Resource Center to be most helpful as I found a Biography/Literary critique that I’m satisfied with. It includes information about the life of the author and what inspired Bambara to write stories about the struggles African Americans go through, usually in their adolescence. Along with the life story the writer includes critiques of Toni Cade Bambara’s stories.

I really like your thesis claim it really hits on a point of when you have to face reality. All of the lower-class kids took that trip to the toy store in the wealthier area and right away you could see the huge difference in income level. The story alone felt like it really drew attention to the harshness of reality and gave an insight as a whole to a real-life situation only a handful would be able to tell whats going on around them hence why Slyvia was one of them able to.
I really like your thesis. It’s right on point and you can get a lot of background that would support it. I also feel like what you have found will definitely be beneficial to your essay and I think it will give you necessary insight.
Raiza, it is not enough to just compliment someone’s post. Your response must meet the length requirement and must move the conversation along.
Hi Toribio, I really like your thesis and the concept of how the African American children faced inequality in America, I will be waiting to see you use this thesis in your essay and your research paper.
Samra, your response must meet the length requirement and must add to the conversation. It is not enough to just agree with or compliment someone else’s post.
Toribio, thank you for posting your thesis statement. It would be helpful if others note that you are not promising to discuss the broad issue of inequality but how it impacts the characters in the story.
