In the story “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, one thing that surprised me was from the end of the story when Madame Loisel found out that the necklace that she actually lost was fake and was not even close to value that her and her husband had taken the loan for and had spent years paying off the debt by working hard. One thing that intrigued me was the character of Mathilde Loisel how she was very curious and fascinated with her dreams of being rich and living like the upper class that she borrowed a necklace for the party, lost it and then had to work hard all her life in order to pay it off.One thing that puzzled me in the reading was that why did she not tell her friend that she lost her necklace and why did she not have any conversation related to the necklace in years? because if she did tell her friend she could have found out the actual worth of the necklace and would not have to take on such a huge debt.

I think she may not have told her friend about the necklace because who would handle the loss of a piece of jewelry? Her friend allowed her to choose this piece, it wasn’t even one offered to her but her friend allowed her to pick. Madam Forestier was well-off, so Mathilde assumed her jewelry was real. I don’t think I’d be able to tell someone I lost a diamond necklace that was loaned to me. I think she also didn’t say anything in years having being preoccupied with her new life. The story states Mathilde and Loisel moved, and began working extra jobs to pay off the debt. Perhaps their time was consumed with the debt and worry of paying everything off. Mathilde also may have been ashamed of her new life and how she looked. If you recall, the story states she didn’t even want people at the ball to see her in her regular, “poor” coat. Could you imagine how she felt she looked after working so hard? It says she aged years because of the work and her clothing also played the same part (looking old and worn out), so perhaps she hadn’t spoken to her in years due to shame and embarrassment. She did state that she said hello to her friend now because the debt was paid – maybe she was afraid of repercussions of what her friend would say if she found out the truth. Everyone’s afraid of the truth, especially a hard truth.
