In “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara both Qt and sugar both have a different experience when visiting the toy store and reflect on it. with sugar after they saw a toy in the store they started seeing things different and referring to a lot of things to what seen as the toy they have seen when at the book store. With Qt they as well felt different when going to the toy store and answering something correctly when ask by miss Moore. They then go Back to the mailbox and now have a different thought. i feel that Miss Moore wanted to tech these kids a lesson about the type of world they are living in and show them whats wrong and what’s right. They also learn about what it takes to save and spend money and how much they can save by just not spending and how it can 100% make a difference in life.

I believe Miss Moore did teach them a lesson about the world they come from. These kids growing up in the inner city, and poor. They were not aware of how people with more resources live. What the toys in the store costed could have bought furniture for them. The question was raised “who are these people that spend that much for performing clowns and $1000 for toy sailboats. Sylvia was so angry after the trip that she was ready to fight. She asked Miss Moore why did she bring them there. That anger though directed towards Miss Moore, was towards the realization of her own poverty. She went over what her mom would say if she even asked for anything from there.
I strongly believe that Miss Moore was trying to teach the young kids a lesson about their background. These kids grow up in Harlem don’t really have a lot and once we hear ‘Harlem’ we think about projects, low income families, homeless people because that is what the society has made us think. I also feel like Miss Moore was trying to direct these kids in the right path, she was trying to educate the kids on appearances, class, equality and etc.
Starr, thank you for jumping in to start of the week’s conversation. You write here that Sugar and QT have “a different thought,” but what is that thought? The prompt this week asks for a kind of comparison/contrast between two characters in the story, not about Miss Moore’s motivations. Can you be more specific here?
I like that you chose to compare QT and Sugar because it seems easier to compare Sugar and Sylvia or even Sylvia and Mercedes, which makes your choice intriguing. You write about the two having different thoughts when returning to the mailbox, but you weren’t too specific. I am interested in what the difference in their perspectives is as well as why the two are so significant. I am also interested in why you mentioned their learning about what it takes to save and how you came to that conclusion.
