I believe you shared “The Most Handsome Drowned Man” as the first story of the course because you wanted to show us the need to be compassionate and welcoming to strangers. The women in this story were kind enough to be welcoming and make clothes for a complete stranger, even when they were confronted with one. The men run around for him, trying to determine who he is. It made me think of the many new immigrants nowadays, many of whom come from war-torn countries. They are “strangers” to us, maybe they are poor and don’t have money to buy a dress that fits. We need to be as kind as the woman in the story to help them and welcome them. At the end of the story, they make the door of the house bigger and the ceiling higher, maybe they want the stranger to make the village a new home.

Hello Jiaying,
I completely agree with your interpretation of the story. It’s amazing how one person can bring about so much change and positivity just by being kind and welcoming. The stranger in the story may have been completely different from the villagers, but their compassion made him feel at home. I think it’s important for us to be reminded of this message, especially in today’s world where there is so much division and negativity. It’s good to be reminded that we can make a difference and bring joy to someone’s life by simply being kind. I’m glad you picked up on this, and I think this is a great way to start the course.
Best,
Hi Jiaying, I agree with your post. It just baffled me to see society cant work together as the villagers. It’s powerful to see that one corpse was able to unite a village and change their perspective of the way they looked at their partner and community. And yes, the story had me thinking about the many immigrants as well that gave up their families or even had to run away because of their safety; if we can stop for a minute and put ourselves in their shoes for a day to experience what they been through, the society would see a different perspective. Like these village women, it just takes one to do the correct thing. Great work.
Hi Jiaying, I do agree with the fact that we should not judge people by there appearance or culture, and we should be willing to help them as much as we can with a positive mind set. The way we think does directly effect our ability to react to situations according to that, for example if we think positive we would react like the boys and try all our best to help the man that was found in the sea, however if we think negative we would start thinking and judging the man like the women did without knowing his situation.
I agree with your take on the story as growing up I would go back and forth between two different mindsets from only being there and supporting people that support you and now changing my way of thinking to be more supportive and thinking of others to see the good in people. It shows that a little bit of kindness and compassion could go a long way and whenever you should not judge a book by its cover.
Hi Jiaying! I strongly agree with your post. We do need to be more compassionate and welcoming. Now and days people are just stuck to their phones, they want to make a video off of everything. If they see someone getting hit by a car they are quick to take their phone and recored and not even call for help. When reading your post what crossed my mind was how in todays world we are quick to judge a person by their appearances. We do this by looking at the other person from head to toe and making a comment about what they are wearing. We judge on culture, gender and so much more.
Hello! I just wanted to say I completely understand what your point on this is. I feel like if people were more open minded and had more love for each other we would definitely be making more progress in humanity. Our lives are now so based off of who is better, who has more than the other, who has more power over others and it is slowly destroying our chances of learning how to help each other in any sort of way. I wish we all this mindset where everything wasn’t just based off of where we come from or what we look like or the colour of our skin.
