I think that this story was assigned to show the great change the washed up drowned man brought to the village. The woman took care of the dead man making him new clothes and preparing him for a proper funeral service in their village. The man was so big that it was hard for the woman to accommodate for him and take care of him, the big man brought the whole village together to try to identity who he was, the other men in the village where getting jealous because a dead man was getting all the attention from the woman. The people of the village realized that the man was sincerely and had no control of his giant size so he was ashamed of his troubles for being so big. This changed the whole village the occurrence of this drowned washed up man made the village see how ashamed he was of his size and they made their houses bigger doors wider and taller ceilings so his memory could live on without having to worry about his big awkward size.

I agree with you. Sometimes strangers can make such a huge influence on you without even having to speak. Sympathy is such a strong feeling and the women and men of the village used that feeling to change their ways of living to honor the man. He influenced them to make their village more beautiful and worthy enough to call it his home as well. The men changed their minds about sinking him to the bottom of the sea and decided to let him float so that he could return if and whenever he wanted to. The expression on his face was described as shame and that transformed their views immediately which just goes to show how strong emotions can be.
I definitely agree with you. In different ways there are people that can just change your type of mindset, and make an impact in ways that you would not expect. You would not have to speak with a person to feel what they are going through, but just by taking a look at them, you are just wondering and questioning yourself what a person may be going through. The villagers were admiring him and while they were there they knew that he was not okay with his size just by the look on his face. But he made a big impact in the village, and made the villagers come together, and helped him even though they did not have to, they still did.
Kemol, Thanks for jumping in and getting this first discussion started. You have a really good grasp on the story. But I’m not quite clear why you think I like to assign it first. How might the change you mention in your post have something to do with my motivation?
i think the changed i mentioned earlier helped the reader understand not to judge a book by its cover considering everyone in the village had a nearly different opinion on the washed up drowned man. Even with the drowned mans death the drowned man helped bring everyone in the village together to care for him i think you assigned this story to show that people still care about each other, even if they don’t show it that often. Inside the story the everyone from the village played a part and came together for the drowned man they changed their ways for the drowned man so he didn’t die in vain.
