After finishing my first essay, I realized that writing an English essay is not easy, especially since it has to follow the MLA format exactly. As someone who started learning English later in life and still isn’t very good at it, this made the process even harder for me. I never really liked writing when I was young, and I didn’t have much interest in reading or writing. After completing this essay, I feel like I need to improve both my understanding of the writing requirements and my way of organizing ideas.

I couldn’t even begin to imagine how difficult it would be to write an essay in a language I’m not quite fluent in. Although, I can relate to the struggle of having to follow the exact MLA format. I found keeping a bunch of tabs open about writing in MLA format to be helpful, whether it was for structuring the first page or works cited. I also found it useful to use the requirements/guidelines page as a checklist for myself. Practicing always helps, and I’m positive that you’ll get the hang of essay writing!
Hang, yes, this is a hard assignment even for native English speakers. I have nothing but admiration for students for whom English is a second (or third) language. Everything is much more challenging. Don’t get discouraged. Just read the comments and revise. This is a multi-layered assignment. Nan, your colleague, said she was glad to have multiple screens while writing this. I printed out the student sample for reference when reading the essays from this class. I also had to constantly refer back to the directions for the essay I gave to you.
It’s awesome that you see the challenges and things to work on after finishing your first essay. Writing in English, especially in MLA style, can be tricky, but realizing this is a big step toward getting better. It’s totally normal to have a hard time with a language you’re still learning, and your skills will definitely get better with time. Just keep practicing, and don’t get down on yourself, your hard work to organize your thoughts and grasp writing guidelines will really pay off if you stick with it.
