The vignette that made the strongest impression on me was “A Smart Cookie” on Page 90. This vignette shows Esperanza’s mother thinking back to her past and how she could have been something more compared to her present self. She tells her daughter Esperanza to stay in school and study since she doesn’t want her daughter to end up like her who is disgusted with the reason she didn’t stay in school. This made the strongest impression on me because while I don’t have as much experience compared to Esperanza’s mother I sometimes also think back and think that I could have done better in certain things. I also hope that I do not end up like the mother in the future who regrets not taking action in the past due to feeling shame or that I am not good enough to do something for whatever reason I made up back then.

Hi Alvin,
As in the story, My mom is always telling me to not end up like her. She has never really been satisfied with a lot of things in her life. It’s kind of unsettling how similar Esperanza’s mom is to my own mom. But, even with the mistakes they think they’ve made, they have more to show for themselves then they let on.
Hi Alvin, I agree with “A Smart Cookie” making a strong impression on me as well because parents want us to be better than they were. That’s why they are always on us and putting high expectations on us. While reading this story it made me think of my great grandmother and the talks we always use to have after school. She graduated high school at 16 years old but couldn’t go to college because she had to stay home and help take care of the family. She was always on us about furthering our education and becoming something, so we didn’t have to depend on someone to take care to us.
