For my research paper I will be writing about the story “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. In the story, a young Langston believes he must lie about being saved to appease those gathered in the church, where the story takes place. This lie is so detrimental to Langston that it causes him to lose faith in Jesus Christ. My research paper will explore the significance of social culture and how it plays an influential role in his decision to lie by examining both the setting and secondary characters. My secondary sources will be Langston Hughes biography to gather knowledge on the familiar and cultural upbringing of Mr. Hughes and various articles pertaining to Lev Vygotskys theory of social culture to provide a clear point of reference to what social culture is and its effects on the human experience. I have not explored the BMCC database yet, I have been using external sources from google searches and textbook infromation.

Both secondary sources stated bring excellent information to back up your thesis but for Langston’s biography, I would also look at his famous Harlem Renaissance and compare it to the path he went through in Salvation. The role of Christianity is mentioned in how it affected African American lives and his poem “Madam and the Minister” talks about the mood towards religion in his Harlem Renaissance. With Lev’s theory, you can go in-depth on why Langston didn’t feel or see anything and what really caused it.
Thank you for your feed back Christian! I will definitely look into “Harlem Renaissance” as a potential source, “madam and the Minister” as well.
Hi Joseph,
I really enjoyed your answer to this week’s discussion. I think your secondary source is a good choice for the story that you chose. Your secondary source reminds me of mine because it also talks about religion, I decided to write about “Araby” by James Joyce. I’m writing about how the girl the narrator liked changed his views and beliefs in his own religion, Catholicism. But overall, I think your sources are perfect to back up your thesis.
Were is your thesis statement?
