A Good Man Is Hard to Find is a story about a family who decides to go on a road trip to Tennessee but are killed along the way. On the surface the story seems to be about a family whose road trip is ended short due to tragedy. However, the story is really centered on the grandmother, the protagonist, and how her hypocrisy and ethics led to the downfall of her family. First, her standards are extremely hypocritical. She cared about her appearance and how people saw her on the surface but around her family she didn’t mind lying to get what she wanted. Her blatant racism is also a stark contrast from her outwards appearance. Furthermore, it was her lying that led the family to their death. She lied about the fact that there was treasure in an old plantation to manipulate the children into convincing their father to driving there. Later, she realized that the plantation was actually in Tennessee and everything goes downhill from there. She is the reason that the her family was killed.

Hello Zi. I totally agree with you. The grandmother was very selfish and it is extremely sad that the story had to end the way it did. She is totally reason why her family was killed and if The Misfit speared her life I don’t think she would’ve taken accountability for her actions. When she realized they were in the wrong state, she should’ve said something. It’s so unfortunate that individuals have to lie to get the things that want. Lies always catch up, just like it has done so in this story.
Hi Zi. I agree with you completely. The grandmother tended to gravitate more toward being self-centered and selfish, only doing things for her own benefit no matter what. I think her racism ties into her manipulation. Where it’s shown the most is how Red’s Sammy is described as a “tall burnt-brown woman with hair and eyes lighter than her skin”, inferring she’s non-white, isn’t trusted because she is weary of the remarks made by the family members while Red Sammy is trusted because he is quick to trust the grandmother, opening up a pathway for manipulation.
