The two characters I chose are Mercedes and Sylvia who visited the FAO Schwarz store and seemed to have different reactions. They both saw that toys were so expensive. They both realized that a sailboat toy cost was the same as the cost of rent, but it seemed like Mercedes really wasn’t surprised. She mentioned that she would like to go back on her birthday when she gets money. She seemed to come from a family who didn’t struggle. I felt like this isn’t something new to her and she is okay with it. As opposed to Sylvia, was upset and angry about it. She was surprised that there are people who are okay with buying these toys when that same amount of money can be used for bills and rent. Sylvia seemed like she was interested at the store but didn’t want to show it to Miss Moore. I think was Mercedes was nonchalant about it. On the other hand, Sylvia was processing her thoughts. I think Sylvia didn’t find it fair that she wasn’t part of that life.

I completely agree Mercedes had a totally different response than the rest of the kids when they saw the price of the toys at the store. Most of the kids saw that they couldn’t afford it and compared what they could spend with that amount of money. Meanwhile, Mercedes said that she wanted to come back when she got her birthday money. I personally chose Sugar and Mercedes and I think Sylvia also was a great choice since she also noticed a gap in their wealth and wanted that for herself
Hi Angelica, I feel like you compared 2 good characters because they are complete opposites. Sylvia definitely was upset because she was jealous that people would actually spend a lot of money on those toys in FAO Schwartz while she couldn’t afford it. Mercedes definitely came from money and Sylvia wasn’t happy about Mercedes answer to the question either hence why she reacted that way after Mercedes said she wanted to come back after her birthday.
Hi Angelica, I second that Sylvia felt left out and not in on that kind of lifestyle. She said so herself, when she said “Why aren’t we in on it.” I also agree that she felt that amount of money should be going towards bills and food, and so many other things pertaining to maintaining a stable life. Mercedes did show that this amount of money was normal to her. These are two good characters to compare, because they are so different from each other, complete opposites.
