The short story “The Most Handsome Drowned Man”, written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is an example of society’s behaviors. We can see how the appearance changes the way people behave. The author describes the drowned man’s physical appearance very detailed. I find this type of story interesting because it isn’t obvious to understand (although the author describes everything in details), you have to read it a few times, and it can be interpreted in different ways. I think this is why professor Conway chose this story first; it gives us an idea of what the course content will look like and what to expect. As I see it, this story is a way to emphasize the relationship between men and women and also how physical appearance affects people’s behavior.

Hello Tamar! I enjoyed reading your discussion and why you thought the professor assigned this story to us as the first. The appearance did change the way that the people in the village behaved. I also thought that the men were jealous and upset because the man had a lot of attention from the women and that they always wanted to take care of him. It was also really interesting to me that his appearance caught the attention of other villages, and how more people went to see him, and give him flowers. I had to read a few paragraphs a couple of times as well. The more I read it over and over again, the more I understood what the author was explaining.
Hi, Tamar
Your discussion was very interesting to read. I also agree with you when you stated that you think Professor Conway assigned this read to us as preparation for our upcoming assignments. I found myself reading this short story over and over again because there is so many ways of interpreting it. Therefore, I believe there is no wrong answer here. It forces us to also use our imagination just like the villagers did with Esteban, in order to bring to life our ideas.
