I think you might have assigned “The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” as the first story for the course because it can give insight on how people think and assume what people are like when they haven’t gotten a chance to get to know a person, and sometimes it can make them look at their life a little different. For example there are plenty of people that have never left America or have never lived in a diverse area in America. so when they see someone that looks different they are curious and their mind starts to wonder. Some people come up with their own ideas of how a person is, what their life is like, and sometimes start to think maybe their life isn’t as interesting as they thought. In this case the women in the village started to assume the men in their village weren’t man enough because of the corpse that they were looking at and the stories they created in their minds of what his life was like. It just shows that people shouldn’t look at their life differently because they’re assuming what another persons life is like.

Hi Lalique. I totally agree with you about the assumptions of how others may live. People often judge a person based off of how they are dressed or simply their demeanor. Some may look good on the outside and can truly be suffering from depression. You never know what a person is going through and everyone do have a story, but it’s better to know than to actually assume. The women in the village was something else. Esteban could’ve been an abusive womanizer, so they definitely shouldn’t have looked at their men as less then. The funny thing is the men of the village didn’t like it, but they definitely understood.
Lalique, I can relate to what you said about giving insight into others when not knowing them. I used to often “judge a book by its cover” but learned that there are people with good hearts and to stop turning my head the other way. As mentioned the women in the story, would compare their men with the corpse and look down on the men in the village because the corpse was much better, it isn’t a reasonable thing to do because they absolutely didn’t even know who this man was as he wasn’t claimed by any village but was seen as god-like just based off how he looked.
Hi Lalique,
I find your response to be very interesting, I never thought of the way you said about people that never left America. I agree with that statement because it reminds me of when I went to Florida, a lot of people in the neighborhood where my brother lives are mainly White. They see me, as a person of Latin descent, and they immediately think I am Mexican or I like spicy food, etc. It brings back to the women who saw Esteban and saw how he was very different from all the men in their village, and they praised Esteban for it. In this case, the people in Florida were sort of stereotyping me because they don’t usually see Latinos in their neighborhood.
Hello Lalique I like your interpretation on why this story was the first to be assigned. When people see others wearing expensive things or traveling and doing many things they would think that their life is interesting. This is also amplified when people go on social media they can see people doing all kinds of things and it would further solidify their idea that this person is living the life they imagine them to be. Although for the most part those people doing all kinds of things usually always never live the life they show in their posts.
