Odalis Ortega final discussion

The book that added some meaning into my life was “the handsomest drowned man”. It added meaning to my life because it reminded me how powerful perspective can be and how it can impact not only yourself but others as well. The different way perspective can shift a story is similar to real world situations. An example of this would be gossip and how one’s perspective can completely change the whole story. In gossip there can be many perspectives: the outsider, the perpetrator and the victim/ other person receiving the ire of the other. The book gave me some insight that we can change how we view things and have a positive spin to it.

“Where are you going, where have you been” was something truly scary and an unfortunate truth for many women and girls. One’s typical response when facing a dangerous situation is “fight or flight” and mine is typically fight. I only recall freezing once when I was younger and thought someone was trying to break into my house when I was home alone( it was the downstairs neighbor banging the doors cuz he forgot his keys). I froze and went entirely cold for 3 minutes before picking up a medal pole and walking towards the door. I was trembling the whole time but I mentally prepared myself to swing at the person’s head if necessary. Since I was younger and had predators (both my age or much older) I taught myself and bought tools in self defense. From fighting lessons, pepper spray and semi memorizing New York’s defense laws I was a fighter. This showed me the perspective of someone who is not a fighter. Someone who had been naive and not aware of the monsters that roamed the world( a lesson I learned at 6 years old). It changed my perspective as I felt the chill and fear once the “villain” started threatening to harm the family. It showed me the perspective of one who freezes instead of running or fighting.

The writing that had an appealing style to me was “My Mistress’s Eyes Are Nothing like the Sun”. When thinking of poetry I think of romance and rhymes. Out rightly insulting your lover is something I didn’t expect and that’s what caught my attention. The writing style gained my interest by being something unexpected.
