A few days ago, I was strictly again abortion. I still against it but after I read the mother by Gwendolyn Brooks. I consider a few situations where I accept that abortion is a necessity. Throughout my reading of that poems, the emotions expressed in it such as guiltiness, kind of remorse, the honesty… Not only demonstrates the feelings of the poet and how poetry can help people to express their emotions in a beautiful way. Also, the poem can affect the reader emotions and way of thinking. It makes me think that I was so narrow minded about the act of abortion, and I was too bias to pro-life because of the behavior of pro-abortion that I did not consider some people. I always know that poetry have the purpose of educating people in different ways, However I never accounted one that once change my point of view about one of my believes. So, the poem of the mother convinces me that poetry have a power that can persuade people whatever their believes.

Anta, thank you so much for sharing this shift in perspective that you experienced in reading “the mother. I wish everyone who was adamantly anti-abortion would read this poem. As with you, the person doesn’t have to change his/her beliefs but at least there might be some deeper understanding of what a woman goes through when making this choice. You just reinforced the point that I hoped to make by assigning “The Most Handsome Drowned Man” as the first reading—that literature can open people’s minds and change perspectives.
I think that’s amazing. To me, a big part of what makes literature and art so great is it allows people to understand the experiences of others and grow to have a more holistic view of the world. I’m glad this poem was able to provide that for you. For me, the poem helped to develop a deeper understanding of what it’s like to go through a pregnancy and abortion. Being a man, it’s impossible for me to ever truly know how that affects someone. When discussing pregnancy and raising a child, it is often not acknowledged how heavily that burden can weigh on a parent, and I don’t want to be ignorant of that. Because of that, I always enjoy reading stories from perspectives different from mine.
