This link brings you to a very interesting literary analysis of “A Rose for Emily” by Professor Mary Ellen Byrne of Ocean County College, New Jersey.  The article is actually written for instructors teaching the story to the class, so please don’t be put off by the occasional comments about students.  I include this in the week’s readings because I think the article discusses the
functions of town and time in the story so well.

Film: “A Rose for Emily” (Optional)

Activity 4

Essay 1 due: Sunday, February 28, 11:59 p.m.

In this class, you will be developing one single research essay over the course of the 15-week semester. We will be working on this project step by step. This process is known as “scaffolding.” The final product will be a thesis-driven essay of 3-4 pages in length. Before doing anything else, please review the student sample essay so you understand what your final product will look like.

For Essay 1, you will write only an introduction (6-10 sentences). Please read all directions carefully and follow the outline given. Click here to access Essay 1 Directions.

All essays in this class must adhere to MLA format. Before submitting any written work, please review the following guides to formatting. Only correctly formatted essays will be eligible for a grade of A. There will be a quiz on format next week.

Click this link to access the Week 4 Discussion Board.

As I’m sure you can understand that with so many participants in our OpenLab group, it is not possible for me to respond individually to every single post. However, I assure you that I do read every post. I will, of course, be jumping into the forum from time to time, usually in the first few days of the week. This discussion board really belongs to you and your colleagues.
