Good morning Professor Conway, is the research paper topic on anything specific such as wants going on in the world or is it on anything we want to bring to peoples attention?
Good Morning Professor Conway, for the research paper are we to cover only one literary work or will we incorporate multiple works? Based on the answer to the previous question from Heaven, I am assuming it is on one work. I have a few drafts I worked on last week and depending on the answer this would help me figure out the direction I would like to go. I also read the material for week five and found this to be something I could work on as well. Which brings me to my second question. For essay 1, is week 5 included with the literary topics for this assignment?
Juan, thanks for your query. Please read Activity 5 on the Week 4 page. it gives step-by-step directions for the assignment. Click the “Essay 1 Directions” link.
Oh I see, my apologies I should have read more carefully. Thank you.
I had a question for the professor based on the Essay assignment due this week.
“I am currently drafting my introduction for the Essay 1 assignment. I know that formal academic writing is typically written in the third person. I was curious If we are allowed to add in personal experiences to help validate our thesis? ”
Her response:
“The answer to your question is no. ENG 201 is different from ENG 101 in which students are often encouraged to include personal experience to enrich essays. In ENG 201, the essays should be written in the objective third-person point of view and should be completely focused on the work of literature being discussed. Students should not use the “I” or “you” point of view.
Your thesis, in this case, should be a discussion of a literary element relevant to your chosen story. Examples of literary elements are given in the directions and might include epiphany, point of view, setting and imagery, and other elements.”
She wanted me to post this in case anyone else has similar questions.
Megan, thank you so much for posting this. It appears that others have the same question. Some have never been asked to write an analytical essay about a literary work before.
