Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” is a work of literature that is deeply relevant because it focuses on the influence that pride, materialism, and the quest of social status have on humans. Mathilde Loisel, a lady who is captivated by her position in society and her fortune, is the protagonist of this novel. During her voyage, she misplaced a piece of jewelry that she had borrowed, which is a representation of dishonesty and a lack of self-assurance. The narrative highlights the need of taking the time to contemplate one’s own ideals and objectives, as well as the notion that genuine happiness and contentment are not attained via monetary gain or social standing, but rather through the cultivation of acceptance and thankfulness. The presentation offered a novel viewpoint on a variety of subjects, with a particular emphasis on the significance of living within one’s means in order to satisfy the requirements of others without compromising one’s own desires for happiness.

Which vignette from “The House on Mango Street” surprised you in some way, and why? The differences between boys and girls within the same family. Unlike other works by Sandra Cisneros, it addresses the larger issue of societal restrictions and makes the reader feel a sense of empathy for the characters. Which vignette intrigued you and why? The Feelings, memories, companionship, and identity are among the subjects explored. The protagonist’s willingness to join a bike share and the fleeting connections evoke memories of carefree youth. Which vignette puzzled you and why? The “Laughter” narrative in the book, which explores the narrator’s relationship with her sister Nenny and their shared laughter, is perplexing due to the abstract connection between laughing and visual images.
I’m making comparisons between the Brothers Grimm and Raymond Carver’s restrained writing styles. The The simplicity and directness of Raymond Carver’s literary style are evident in its emphasis on commonplace events and feelings. His poetry is simple and direct, unlike “Snow White” by the Brothers Grimm makes extensive use of descriptive language. Carver’s “Cathedral” illustrates the narrator’s protectiveness towards his wife and jealously towards her past suitors. Both tales deal with sentiments of insecurity and jealousy. This trait is seen often in the narrative, as Snow White’s admiration and attractiveness caused her to become envious. The incidents and common individuals in Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” and “Snow White” short stories represent emotions that are relatable to everyday life, such as rage, jealously, and the will to do damage to others. These tales tell us that sometimes our wishes come true and that occasionally our wishes are not granted. Insecurity and sentiments of jealousy are explored in both tales.
In this essay, the author discusses the fairy tale “Snow White” by Bruno Bettelheim and another popular movie adaptation. They argue that not all fairy tales should be read by children due to their negative impact and restrictions on reading. The author will use primary and secondary sources to explore the familiar aspect of fairytales, including characters, setting, and plot. They appreciate the lessons that fairytales can offer and enjoy learning about them. One of the fairytales they learned more about is “Snow White,” which has multiple meanings that the author was unaware of. The author and their niece enjoyed watching “Snow White” as a child. They believe that reading or watching fairy tales is a great way to spend time together, and no matter the age, anyone can connect over a variety of adventure stories. The author has conducted research using primary and secondary sources to examine child development in fairytales.
Bruno Bettelheim’s psychologically informed interpretation of “Little Snow White” suggests that the story is a coming-of-age story about a girl’s growth, highlighting the misinformation and mistreatment of women in fairy tales. He compares this to Anne Sexton’s presentation of the story, which portrays women as less valuable than men, often labeled as weak and in need of men. Women often aspire to beauty, as they are often princesses and kind, while unattractive women are labeled as witches. Snow White, as an ordinary girl, developed her ability to deal with societal evils. Both Bettelheim and Sexton emphasize the need for young women to be more self-reliant and considerate in a culture where they are often mistreated. Bettelheim’s interpretation uses language like maturity, narcissism, and sexuality to convey the reality that fairy tales can have on children, and suggests that they should not be read in the wrong way. On the other hand, Sexton’s retelling of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” highlights the importance of women and their role in society. Bettelheim argues that all fairy tales are not good for kids and should not be read, while Sexton emphasizes the value of women and their importance.
A fascinating story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor explores themes of violence, goodness, sin, and redemption. The narrative focuses around a grandmother and her family, who are seen as the “good” ones, and a misfit as the “evil” ones. However, the report also depicts prejudice, lying, disrespect, and manipulation on the side of the grandmother and family. The character’s reaction to violence, as well as detachment from his actions, contribute to a bleak mood. The story finishes with existential enlightenment and empathy, as the grandmother views the Misfit as one of her own children. This insight stresses the blurry border between good and evil, promoting self-reflection.The grandmother’s acceptance of the Misfit as one of her children shifts the narrative’s tone, fostering empathy and understanding of the blurred lines between good and evil, accompanied by a self-reflection tone.
It takes technique and attitude to read poetry. The rich imagery and sensory language of W. B. Yeats’ poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” convey an emotional reaction to the speaker’s longing for a peaceful retreat. The lines that convey the poem’s ideas, such as “I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore,” make it easier for the reader to identify the poem’s topics and enjoy the masterpiece. The reader is profoundly moved by the poem’s need for comfort and its striking portrayal of nature, particularly amid the fast-paced world of today. The passage “And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow” alludes to the reader’s want for calm and a more leisurely pace of existence. It takes certain abilities and a mentality to read a poetry. The poetry itself has a lot of attitude and skill. “Reading a poem requires both technique and attitude.” nicely complements the poem by W. B. Yeats.
The play Oedipus explores themes of truth, human blindness, and the possibilities and impossibilities of free will and fate. The public’s shame for Oedipus is born when they become aware of his actions, which are not necessarily repugnant to contemporary readers. Instead, Sophocles condemns Oedipus for his greatest sin of hubris, which he performed with a clear and intentional conscience. However, Oedipus was making decisions with limited information and did not choose to commit patricide. The role of the audience is not to make moral judgments but to understand the complexity of Oedipus’s situation. The play asked its original viewers to consider intentionality and purpose, freeing them from the burden of deciding Oedipus’s guilt. In today’s world, Oedipus’s actions would be condemned differently, but the overriding moral thread of the text remains. While murdering his father was not a crime per se, Oedipus did something shameful in the cultural context of his time. For Oedipus, the shame was a function of his tempted fate and killing his father, making his actions relevant to the modern world.
Emily Dickson’s “The Story of an Hour” and “The Wife” are two pieces that examine the female gender and its position in society. The first verse opens with the poem “I’m Wife,” implying that women become rulers after marriage. The second stanza, “The Story of an Hour,” depicts a female character who is relieved after her husband’s death and expresses numerous feelings. Both pieces stress men’s authority in the marital structure, as demonstrated in Dickson’s poetry “My Wife.” The poem emphasizes the changes in a woman’s life that occur after she marries and is obligated to submit to the man. Mrs. Mallard’s delight upon her husband’s death represents her independence from being governed by another person, as she lives for herself. Both works have a common topic that focuses on the female gender and their status in society, while also emphasizing the important role of males in the lives of women.
Many people faced the worst catastrophe during COVID-19, forcing a large number of people in our country to act out in a variety of ways. People worried and stored up on as much as they could; most stayed indoors; many babies were delivered inside and are now known as “covid – 19 babies.” This pandemic also had an impact on people’s emotional and physical health; individuals became fearful of contracting the virus next. Oedipus behavior examines daily activities of citizens, focusing on their desire to be recognized as heroes and problem solvers. However, he couldn’t help those who harmed them, a sentiment similar to how we all sought assistance during the pandemic but couldn’t, requiring self-help and growth.
According to Salman Rushdie, “Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart.” This statement was picked since it is something that we all face on a regular basis. I like how Salman Rushdie says, “I hope to find not absolute truth, but the truth of the tale of the imagination and the heart.” To me, it is finding things in life or deciding the reality of things, not just the truth but also the experience itself, in order to learn more from the truth. It inspired me and makes a lot of sense.I really enjoy how he states literature is a part of human civilization and the human soul. That means a lot to me. Saying that there is literature even in our own communities and in our hearts.
I believe Professor Conway chose this as the first narrative in the course to help us grasp what individuals are capable of and what they can accomplish for our future. According to the final line, “men and women became aware for the first time of the desolation of their streets, the dryness of their courtyards, the narrowness of their dreams as they faced the splendor and beauty of their drowned man.” It shifts from sadness at the man’s death to excitement and admiration for his looks. After visualizing how their environment has changed, the villagers discuss what they would do differently in the future.
Toni Cade Bambara’s The Lesson illustrates C.S. Lewis’s literary criticism by telling us how Sylvia perceives and thinks about her environment as an impoverished black kid in the 1960s. The narrative reminded us of some of our personal challenges, which some of us are still dealing with in 2023.
I read Langston Hughes’s novella “Salvation” for this. One of the most moving sequences in the novel is when the narrator finds himself as the last child on the mourners’ bench, surrounded by a crowd praying passionately for his redemption. Waves of joy washed across the area. Women sprang into the air. My aunt wrapped her arms around me.” Despite the fact that my background is a little different. But when I was 7-8 years old, I was a horrible child. I used to fight, cuss, and do other nefarious things. But one day, my aunt took me to church. I had never considered attending to church when I was younger. Everyone in the congregation was astounded that I was not fighting.
