Reading through all the quotes,I chose-” literature adds to reality,it does not simply describe it.”(C.Slwels) because literature expands into many different understandings around society today. In the the story “The lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, Syliva plays a big role in how society is seen from two different perspectives. she sees the way Miss Moore describes the social classes in front of the kids and expands her thoughts about the rich and poor people. She goes on by saying “What kinda work they do and how they live and how come we ain’t in on it?”..In other words, she finds that society is unfair and people who work hard get everything they want while people who struggle still try and can’t get what they want or need. Miss Moore describes these locations herself, as well as the differences in how the children behave while there- to express and have the kids think more about lifting themselves out of poverty and experience life outside of the projects.

Stephanie, you make a good connection here. As you note, Sylvia’s realization goes far beyond the details of the story and the description of the neighborhood, the store, and the children. A much larger message, especially about the protagonist’s ephiphany, is embodied in the story, which is expressed in the quote you have chosen.
Hello Stephanie, I loved the quote you chose for your essay, as well as the essay you selected to complement it. I think you highlighted how the short story brings out the reality of real-world problems excellently. Personally, after reading the short story, I reflected on societal inequalities I’ve observed in my own life. So, I believe the quote you chose complements the short story perfectly.
Hi Stephanie, I think you’ve chosen a well related story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara to the quote by C.S Lewis “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it”. I agree that It highlights how literature can serve as a lens through which we explore the social inequalities we face in this society. Ultimately, I agree with the fact that you’ve pointed out “What kinda work they do and how they live and how come we ain’t in on it?”.
Hello Stephanie, I can relate to your statement. I picked the same quote and related it to the Sylvia story. I agree with it relating to society and unfairness. With judgements being made of this, they feel like they can’t make it to being successful. Poverty can be a big affect to society, this being said that a lot Criticism. People who come from the bottom, struggle to go higher, and others at times have connections that are made to be put in that position.
