The theme in the nineteenth- century Emily Dickinson poem “The Wife’ echoed in the ” The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin because they focused on female gender. It demonstrated that men where the one who dominated the marriage. In “The Story of An Hour” Mrs.Mallard was grieving her husband death but then has a realization of what a future with freedom would be like. The quote “She rose to his requirement” ( Emily Dickinson) broke down that females in the 19th century had to put any type of emotions and privilege their husband first. The theme was described as a women’s role in society and marriage. A women won’t have time to think about the future desires she wanted and how it would only be to provide for the husband.

I agree with u point about the common themes between Emily Dickinson’s poems and Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour. It clearly emphasizes the role of women in marriage in the 19th century and shows the harshness of marriage at the time. Actually the man is depicted as a dominant figure who determines his wife’s life and desires. Mrs. Mallard’s complicated feelings about her husband’s death demonstrate a woman’s repressed desire for freedom and self-expression. I could see that they didn’t have time to think about their future dreams and desires.
Yuki, do we see any evidence of male dominance in the story or poem? I think one of Chopin’s points is that the husband in the story has never been anything but kind to his wife. She craves a quite absolute freedom
Hello Daisy,
I agree with your comment, in the 19th centuries, women were not free in their marriage, since they were always under hr husbands dominance. I like how you described what was the author point and what message they wanted to give.
I agree with you Daisy, both (poem and short reading) expand female gender plays a big role throughout each one’s marriage, many people can experience the worst while others don’t.She expressed her emotions and liberty as a result of how she felt about her husband limiting her rights.
Hi Daisy,
The opening line of the poem I feel really summarizes the readings of this week. “She rose to his requirement” really emphasizes the role expected from every single woman for so many years. Even today, there are still people who determine a woman’s worth to how great a wife she can be. Thankfully, nowadays regardless of anyone’s thoughts, most women have the choice to be independent or a wife.
