Snapchat’s Spotlight feature, launched in 2020, is creating new financial opportunities for everyday users. By offering cash rewards for viral video content, it’s enabling regular people and influencers to earn significant money. Some, like one Snapchat Spotlight user named Katie Feeney, have even used these earnings to pay for college. The platform’s growth puts it in direct competition with TikTok, as creators shift to whichever platform can give them the most income. This shift has turned content creation into a major source of income for many, not just established influencers.

In response to the article, I can see how I’ve been pretty reserved when it comes to posting on social media. I’ve always consumed more content than I’ve created, and I never really saw myself as someone who would make videos, especially ones that might seem “silly.” However, the article made me realize that even casual or fun content can lead to big opportunities. As for Fakey, although I didn’t quite grasp the scoring, it did remind me to be cautious about the sources I engage with online, especially with all the misinformation out there. Going forward though, I might experiment more with posting on platforms like Snapchat or TikTok, even if it’s just for fun, while also staying mindful of fact-checking what I consume.
