In the text “The Omnivores Dilemma” by Michal Pollan, he explains the meaning well behind the omnivore’s dilemma. The meaning of this is that the danger in what we eat only exist because of the vast number of items we can choose from. For example, in the text Pollan says, “Certainly the extraordinary abundance of food in America complicates the whole problem of choice” (Pollan 1). We as humans have the ability to make the choice of what we eat, and it has started to form controversy.
Q8) Pollan then starts to speak about vegetarianism and animal rights awareness because it lets people know of what they are eating and the process it went through to be served to them. For example, in the text Pollan states, “Hunting is in particularly bad odors these days, even among people who still eat meat; apparently it’s the fact killing that these people most object to, or perhaps it’s the pleasure in killing an animal that’s in trouble” (Pollan 3). This demonstrates the killing and taking of an animal’s life has become more than just for survival and food. It has become an activity for us humans to go out there and viciously hunt these animals for the simple joy of killing something or like Pollan said maybe it could be just the enjoyment of chasing an animal that’s in fear.
Q9) When Pollan speaks about ‘the schizoid” he is referring to people that aren’t sympathetic towards the animals that they are eating. For example, this is seen when Pollan says, “The life of the pig has moved out of view” (Pollan 3). This just shows the lack of care for an animal that us humans have. No one would ever care about the murder of a pig in a negative way if anything us humans just see that as more bacon and pernil.
