To me, feminism is the idea that males and females should have equal rights and should be able to accomplish the same things as males without it being weird. No, I wouldn’t consider myself a feminist, but I support it and this is because I believe females should be able to accomplish more without being judged, and their opinions should be heard. In my opinion, Females can do the same things men do, but the narrative always shows that men have more power. I also believe that change can be possible if many are willing to change their ways of thinking and start to take females more seriously. However, I have not spoken up for change or pushed the idea of feminism on others, which is why I don’t consider myself a feminist.
In the Tedtalk “We should all be feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explains her definition of feminism as someone who acknowledges the issue of gender inequality and is willing to speak up and make a change. In a quote, Adichie says “My own definition of feminist is: “A feminist is a man or a woman who says – A feminist is a man or a woman who says, “Yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today, and we must fix it. We must do better.”( Page 10). This message was used close to the end of Adichie’s speech to inform us that both genders can contribute to a change in gender inequality, not just females and there are ways we can make a change. She used this towards the end of her speech because the beginning and middle of her speech were used to give us examples of gender discrimination, misconceptions of feminism and why and how should we be feminists. Adichie thinks gender inequality is an issue in today’s world and is hoping for change so we can all be equal.
