Snapchat has competition with other social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, etc. Snapchat came up with the feature spotlight, this was the way to get themselves up there again. Spotlight was for people to upload videos, if the video goes well/viral, snapchat will pay them well. Thanks to spotlight and social media in general, people are becoming rich in a way that is helping them.

Mbev, Katanu. “Impact of Social Media on Youth.” TEDxYouth@BrookhouseSchool. Accessed 8 Oct. 2024.
In this TEDx talk, Katanu Mbev explores the negative impact of social media on youth mental health, emphasizing its role in fostering insecurity, social currency, and FOMO (fear of missing out). He highlights that over 60% of Kenyan youth are active social media users, often spending hours online, which can lead to detrimental effects. Mbev discusses how social media encourages constant comparison and ties self-worth to likes and shares, exacerbating feelings of inadequacy. He also addresses the anxiety stemming from FOMO, which can lead to irrational withdrawal symptoms when disconnected. To counter these issues, he suggests building a strong value system and engaging in collaborative creativity as ways to transform social media use into a positive force. This source will be useful in my essay to illustrate the mental health challenges faced by today’s youth due to social media.

Angel, Janet, Patrica, Ellen, Zahara. Class interviews 24 September 2024.
During the class interviews I asked my fellow peers their opinions on social based on their age and
social media experience. From what was gathered although most of my peers started using social
media fairly young, they feel there hasn’t been any long-term negative effects as a result. Although
my peers feel social media should definitely be monitored, they feel it mores of a benefit then a
negative. Based on how the responses to the interview were positive I will connect it to my other
sources further my argument that social is beneficial to the growth of youths when properly
supervised.

youths but also can benefit their growth into an adult. Kaveladze dives deep into the risk of
unsupervised social media at a young age like how he would go into 18+ video chat sits on
Chatroulette when he was underaged. He also shines light on how social media can benefit growing
youths especially after COVID-19 like giving isolated children a community to feel welcomed in.
