“The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is about explain what a single story is and the danger it brings.Starts off by her talking about where she is from, that being from eastern Nigeria. She also says how she’s middle class. At a young age she started to read around 4, and started to also write and a young age. She mostly wrote about stuff she read on books her mom could get her, that being British and American Childers book.As she grew up she began to only write about the stuff she read which lead to her assuming that’s she could only write about foreigners. But then she came to the realization that she didn’t have to write about that and that she could write about her life and stuff that she could relate too.She uses a example of her experience with a single story about Fide. The only thing she knew about him was that he is poor since that’s all she heard from her mother but later on she finds out they are also very hardworking after she saw what Fides Family made which was a very beautiful basket.Later in life when she went to a British college she also was on the end of a single story. Her roommate assumed that since she’s from Africa and started to assume thing off her. But later on she understood her roommates point of view. Then later she explains how the single story started for her roommate and most people to assume Africa is a place of negatives and difference.Chimamanda also experience a single story about Mexico and how she assumed that they all are immigrations but when she went to Mexico she realized that Mexico are also full off happy people laughing and cheering.she felt surprised but then full of shame. Then she uses different examples on what would happen if there was more contact to these single stories. She also says that the consequence of single a single story are that it robs people dignity. But at the end Chimamanda gave a solution to solve single stories by making books and education more affordable to free I places where it really isn’t. She also says that all stories matter and that there is never only one story to anything.
The danger of a single story in out day and age leads to new generations into only hearing the one single story and believing it. I seen people only hearing one thing without any other information and it leads to them assuming things that aren’t true and then refuse to believe it’s true sometimes.I believe Professor barnes assigned this reading to help us learn that we should always do our research and to never go based on one thing. To always have a open mind when hearing anything unless your 100% sure.
