Summary
The danger of a single story is a TED talk by Chimamanda Adichie , a Nigerian author who makes emphasis on the dangers of making conclusions from one point of view. The author speaks about how she perceived others from just one point of view and how she was also perceived after her relocation to the US. Chimamanda talks about how the single story is not just an issue among individuals but a worldwide issue caused by stereotypes . She talks on how the single story is created and how she as an individual has come to learn about the dangers of the single story and how she has been affected by it and how to solve the single story .
I agree with Chimamanda's argument that concluding a subject based on just one point of view is wrong . Just like the author , I too am guilty of the single story .sSimilarly , there have been a lot of times I concluded people's personalities based on what someone else told me or based on some things I noticed about them without actually getting to know them .For instance , I once judged a classmate as mean and arrogant based on what the people in my class said about her , only to discover that she was very nice, after we became friends. All the experiences I had, have taught me the danger on making assumptions based on limited information. In today's society where many people assume they are always right , it is very easy to misrepresent people and situations in many areas, and that's where the relevance of the danger of a single story comes to play . It teaches us to not make assumptions about anything or anyone until we have understanding of the people or situation .I think Professor Barnes assigned this reading to create an awareness in us about the dangers of a single story .
