Tamara Guaman Conversation #1

How does the author feel about her writing abilities? The author feels confident about her writing abilities and her love for reading and writing before taking the proficiency test. After failing the proficiency test twice, she lost her confidence and skills in writing even though she was a straight A student that was in honors classes. “I began to hate writing, and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my abilities and ideas I wrote about.” (Nichols 2) If you were Mrs. Brown, the author’s English teacher, what would you say when the author asked: “How can I get A’s in all my English classes but fail the writing part of the proficiency test twice?”If I were Mrs. Brown, I would’ve told Shannon to take it easier on the test and maybe dig in deeper to see if there was something missing that didn’t seem important before. I would’ve reassured her that she was a great student and that if other students with lower writing skills can pass, she could too, maybe the people grading the test were looking for something more in her grade level writing. Has there been a time in your life when you doubted your abilities as a writer or in general? Explain. I find myself doubting my writing skills as a writer most of the time because I have an idea and I know the answers to what I am asked but I tend to give more of my opinion overall. I had pretty decent grades for my essays in my last year of high school but I still felt like there was more to improve since it wasn’t the grade I was seeking for. How do you feel about your writing abilities? I feel like okay about my writing abilities, it’s not that good but also not that bad. I think it needs a lot of improving but I know if I put lots of effort I will become a good writer by the end of my two semesters. I really enjoy writing essays about interesting topics but when I’m not interested in the topic as much I don’t really pay much attention to the outcome of my writing. I do believe I need help with my grammar and punctuation, well maybe a little bit of everything to become a better writer.
