Module objectives
In this module you will:
- Identify strategies to use when faced with differences and tensions with families
- Explore what to do when tensions with families become conflicts
- Brainstorm how to handle conflicts with families
Assignment #1: Reflecting on Conflicts
Log onto FlipGrid (https://flipgrid.com/14e6fea5 your user ID is your first name as it appears on CUNY First) and answer the following questions:
- Describe a conflict you observed or were involved in.
- What was the result or conclusion of the conflict?
- What could the parties have done to avoid the conflict or de-escalate the conflict?
- How do you think the following conflicts should be handled:
- Jameel’s family is upset & does not feel the infant teacher is giving Jameel enough time to eat because Jameel comes home each day with 2/3 of the lunch uneaten
- The infant teacher is upset because they have asked Kiara’s mom to bring in more diapers, and Kiara’s family repeatedly forgets
- Entisar is upset with her co-teacher Roberto, because Roberto creates all of these messy play activities that leave the classroom and babies very messy

Read the When Conflicts Arise Scenarios. Imagine you are the teacher in the situation
Pick 2 scenarios and answers the following questions for each scenario:
- What would you say to the family?
- What are some of the concerns a family/ teachers may have around the issue?
- Use evidence from Gillespie (2006) and TAPS: Partnerships with Families Part 3 video to support your response
