Module 5 Assignment #2: Self-Help Skills (6/8-6/10)

  1. How are the techniques you identified in module #1 to be successful in an on-line class working? What changes do you need to make to ensure you are successful in ECE 110?
  2. Review the Power Point.
  3. Pick 1 age group [infant- toddlers (0-36 months), preschool age children (3-5 years old), or young school age children (kindergarten to 2nd grade)] and pick 1 self- help skill (eating, grooming, hygiene, or daily chores). What can children in the age group you selected do in the self-help skill you picked?  For example, if you picked YOUNG SCHOOL AGE and DRESSING, describe what abilities young school age children have in regards to dressing themselves.  What can the children do independently? What might they need help with?
  4. To teach self-help skills we break down the skill into smaller, manageable parts. Think of a self-help skill you do every day. What are the steps you take to complete self-help-skill?  List the steps – be specific and descriptive as possible! (see example below)
    1. Pick up your toothbrush.
    2. Turn on the water faucet.
    3. Rinse your toothbrush.
    4. Pick up your toothpaste.
    5. Open the toothpaste.
    6. Squeeze out some toothpaste onto the toothbrush head.
    7. Brush your teeth
    8. Spit.
    9. Turn on the water faucet.
    10. Rinse the toothbrush.
    11. Place the toothbrush back in its holder.
    12. Pick up a cup.
    13. Fill the cup with water.
    14. Rinse your mouth with water.
    15. Spit out the water.

Module 5 Assignment #3: Self Assessment (6/8-6/10)

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 110 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).

  • What did you learn in this module?
    • Information/ knowledge
    • Skills
    • Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
  • How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children?
