Watch the video What Babies Learn Before They are Born (I suggest completing this handout while watching the video) and read March of Dimes (2015).  Use information from the video and the reading to answer the questions below:

  1. Why is the prenatal period important?
  2. Considering everyone has experienced trauma and stress during the COVID-19 crisis, what impact could the COVID-19 crisis have on a fetus in the germinal stage, embryonic, and fetal stages of prenatal development?
  3. What “biological postcards from the world outside” might a fetus in New York City be receiving during the COVID-19 crisis?
  4. Considering everyone has experienced trauma and stress during the COVID-19 crisis, what impact could the COVID-19 crisis have on a baby born right after the pandemic ends (their mother was pregnant during the COVID-19 crisis)?
  5. Considering everyone has experienced trauma and stress during the COVID-19 crisis, what impact could the COVID-19 crisis have on a adult (imagine the year is 2040) who was born right after the pandemic ended (their mother was pregnant during the COVID-19 crisis)?
  6. Thinking about what you know about prenatal development, what advise would you give to a family member who is pregnant during the COVID-19 crisis?

Module 2 Assignment #3: Infancy (5/28-5/31)

In this module, please watch 2 videos and read Gillespie & Hunter (2011) then answer the questions below:

  1. Why is trust important during infancy?
  2. What can teachers in infant-toddler classrooms do to build trust with babies and toddlers?
  3. What is attachment?
  4. Why is attachment important when working with infants?
  5. How can teachers build attachments with babies?
  6. What can teachers do to support baby’s physical, social-emotional, and intellectual development?
  7. If you worked into an infant-toddler classroom, what would you look for to determine if the classroom offered quality care and programming?

 

 

Module 2 Assignment #4: Practice Observation (5/28-5/31)

Watch the video. Pick 1 child to focus on. Write a chronological, sequential narrative description of what you saw the child doing in paragraph form.  Be detailed & objective.  In your description, include:

  • Which child did you chose? Describe the child’s appearance (clothing, facial features, skin tone, hair color, hair texture, hair style, body type, etc.).
  • What did the child do during the observation?
  • How did the child move — include all types of movements?
  • What did the child look at, gaze at?
  • What seemed to attract the child’s interest? How can you tell?
  • What toys, materials, &/or furniture did the child use? How?
  • How did the child communicate, including vocalizations, sounds, cries, babbling, words, facial expressions and gestures?
  • How did the child interacts with people?
  • Anything else you notice.

Module 2 Assignment #5: Self-Assessment (5/28-5/31)

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 110 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).
