Conversation #8: Morality

In the film, “Parasite,” the moral dilemma was when the son was given an opportunity, and he had no choice but to take it due to his economic situation, knowing he will have to lie to get the job. This escalated to him and his family planning to get the other current employees in the Park’s family household fired, so his family can also get while jobs as well. Later, leading to a situation that they never would have thought of or was part of their plan.

  1. I would follow my conscience: I feel they did follow his conscience and did was right for him and his family.
  1. I don’t know what I would do: What the son did was the right choice, especially for the situation he and family were in.
  1. I would do whatever would improve my own situation: In the film, this was what the Kim family did, they saw an opportunity and took it with no hesitation.
  1. I would do what god or the scriptures say is right: When the son’s friend suggested his job to him, and the son told his family, they saw it as a blessing and were so grateful for knowing a person like their son’s friend.
  1. I would do whatever made me happy: The Kim family have jobs that give them a life they always wanted to make them happy.
  1. I would follow the advice of an authority figure: In the movie, the authority figure was the parents to their son and daughter, to help them and support them in their life.
  1. I would do what’s best for everyone: The son getting a job that paid well and recommending his family to Park’s family, and his family getting well paid jobs as well made not only him happy but his family too. The Kim family to live a lifestyle they always wanted.

While watching “Parasite,” there was a scene when the Park family when on vacation for their son’s birthday, and the Kim family took advantage of them being away, so they decided to relax and make themselves comfortable at the Park house. When I saw this scene, I was thinking that it was the worst decision they could have made, because everything was going so well. When it led to a life-or-death situation, I was thinking, if they didn’t decide to get drunk in the Park’s living room they won’t be in that situation. If I were in their situation, I would have lied as well to get the job and manipulate the Park’s too, so that my family could be well employed as well. However, something I would not have done is risk getting caught lying and manipulating by thinking it is an innovative idea partying at my boss’s house while they were on vacation.
