Summary
Having watched the movie Moonlight, the main moral dilemma is the main character, Chiron, trying to accept himself. He struggles with masculinity, homophobia and accepting himself throughout all this being a black young man. We see three different stages of his life, him as a child, teenager and grown adult. During this we are seeing the difficulties he is exploring with his sexuality and identity as well with the physical and emotional abuse he goes through throughout his life.
1. I would follow my conscience: If Chiron followed his conscience, in my opinion since growing up he had endured abuse, He would probably still lie about his identity and keep living as he is because he knows he would not be accepted.
2. I don't know what I would do: I think it is easier said than done to embrace who you are, I honestly think the life he began living as a gangster is what many people do in different ways to mask themselves.
3. I would do whatever would improve my own situation: I think the best option was to save enough money and move to another place and start another life starting with the truth about himself.
4. I would do what God, or the scripture say is right: In his situation he would hide his identity since the experience some homosexuals people have had with the church, feeling as if they are not welcome.
5. I would do whatever made me happy: The obvious answer would be him telling the truth about himself and living the life he wants.
6. I would follow the advice of an authority figure: Juan at first seems like the mentor for Chiron but it is difficult because he is also involved with Chiron mother's addiction.
7. I would do what's best for everyone: I think for him that's the life he is living.
If I was in this situation, I don't know what I would do honestly. I think it's hard for anyone to open up about themselves when they do not have that trusted person to confide in. It is easy to say to live the life you want, but in Chiron condition he would not be accepted probably making the dilemma worst for him and making him feel like an outcast.
