The Texas Sharpshooter

Definition: Cherry-picking data or statistics (finding a pattern) to suit an argument or a presumption.

Example: John picks and chooses divorce statistics (from one or two sources) to suit his presumption that woman is the sole problem in marriages since they are the most likely to initiate divorce with their partners.

Explanation: John concludes that it’s women’s fault that there are high divorce rates by only reading sources that align with his beliefs.
