TedTalk: “The Paradox of Choice” by Barry Schwartz

  • Conclusion: Having so many choices, makes life harder.
  • Premises: Having so many choices in life makes it harder for people to make the “perfect decision.” Even if the decision was right or wrong to the person. It will still lead to regret, missed opportunities, and blaming ourselves for the choices we made in our lives.

Article: “From the ‘perfect’ salary to keeping up with the Joneses, here’s how money really affects your happiness” by Cory Stieg

  • Conclusion: Money can affect one’s happiness.
  • Premises: Based on how we use it and what we use it for. Money can change our lives based on how we see it. However, us people have this evolutionary tendency to compare ourselves to others, trying to fit in.

Argument: In the article, “From the perfect salary to keeping up with the Joneses, here’s how money really affects your happiness” by Cory Stieg, I agree with Stieg because money does affect people’s happiness, psychologically, emotional well-being and how we are satisfied with our lives. When we want something so badly and when we finally get it, we are filled with so much joy, but that joy is not forever because we aren’t always satisfied with what we have, as if that was not enough. This is how money is for us. For example, you see something, and you really like it, that you want it so badly. And when you finally get it after so long, you are so happy and satisfied. But after a while you go back to feeling how you felt before (not sure if that last part made sense). Affecting us emotionally.

There are people who just do things just for money, work just for the money, feeling as if they have everything, yet are unhappy. Others need the money to survive, such as now. Basic needs being so expensive lately, and people having jobs that don’t pay as much to be able to cover everything they need. Some have jobs/careers that they love but don’t make enough for the lifestyle they want. No matter what we are never really satisfied, there is always something that makes our happiness temporary. And no matter what money cannot always buy us happiness even if we think it can be the solution to all our problems there is always something that is missing or makes us unsatisfied with our lives.
