conversation 2- Isai

The messages/themes I believe Beyonce wanted to express through her music video were pride in ones ethnicity, proud to be yourself and to ignore any haters because all they will do is put you down. No, if i’m being honest, at first I thought Beyonce was just showing off her fame, well deserved fame since not many minorities get to achieve what she did. Matsouka helped Beyonce convey these messages/themes by doing countless research, showing and using symbolism throughout the video with camera shots, lyrics and clothes. An example of a rhetorical device is, “Y’all haters corny with that illuminati mess.” This is an example of a rhetorical device because Beyonce tells us how she feels towards her haters, addressing them, not only as haters, but also as corny for making up theories like her being involved in the Illuminati. Another example of a rhetorical device is the hyperbole, ” You just might be a black Bill Gates in the making…..” Not saying its not impossible but the quote is definitely an exaggeration because Bill Gates is one if not THE richest man and to call someone the next Bill Gates is DEFINITELY an exaggeration to a certain extent. I think the song became controversial because of what it represents, black empowerment, feminism, and the video taking a jab at Hurricane Katrina.
