Welcome to Week 5!

Welcome to Week 5!

Dear students,

We are in Week 5 of our semester. This week, we will focus on the work by William Julius Wilson where he focuses on exploring the social, political, and economic factors that make inner-city neighborhoods most disadvantaged. I posted Week 5 unit with study materials.

We will only meet once this week, on Thursday, October 6th. I will go over this week’s material on Thursday. Meanwhile, when you find time, please watch the documentary on Pruitt Igoe Housing development on Kanopy which is a free resource for CUNY faculty and students. I also hope that you are working on your annotated bibliographies.

I will have office hours today via ZOOM, from 1 pm to 2 pm: https://bmcc-cuny.zoom.us/j/3772687009

I will also be in my office for office hours on Thursday morning.

Please email me if you have any concerns or issues.

John Jay 550 is REAL!

Turns out your classmate David did not fall for a scam! My apologies, David!

Here is the email I got from John Jay (from a person who is in charge of Justice Academy):

We are so excited to share information on a new program for a special cohort of CUNY Justice Academy, while they are attending their community colleges and after their transition to John Jay. The Transfer 550 program provides one-on-one support with the transfer process and guidance on creating an integrated academic and career plan to ensure a smooth transition to John Jay. Additionally, Transfer 550 participants will have funded academic acceleration and career advancement opportunities, such as placements at internships and summer class funding, once they are John Jay students. To get this program off the ground, we have added a new person to our John Jay transfer team, Teresa Yi-Bourdett tyi-bourdett@jjay.cuny.edu who will be managing this program. We are currently accepting interested CJA students who are in good academic standing and have earned 30+ towards their associate degree. We have invited eligible students to sign up for an info session (which start this week) to learn more. Please pass along the info session sign-up page to your eligible CJA students. Additionally, we will be talking about this new program at our upcoming engagement visits. Elena Rivera-Himmelstein will be sending a follow up email this week with the engagement schedule and info session flyers to share with your students.”

Welcome to Week 3!

Welcome to Week 3!

We are in Week 3 of the semester. This week we will be focusing on learning about social science research. We will discuss how to study some criminological topics, like fear of crime. I posted two chapters to read for this week in Weekly Units. On Thursday, we will have library instruction in our regular classroom.

I have seen a number of submissions for Step 1 of the course project. Great work so far. If you haven’t submitted it yet, please do so soon (due this Sunday).

I am attaching the flyer for the Justice Academy info session here. It will take place on Wednesday, September 28th.
