Step 3

Crime:

My police precinct is the 67th, which is located in East Flatbush. According to the NYC Crime Map, since last month, there has been 187 Crime reported—two murders in the last month and 59 felony assaults. According to NYPD Comp Stats, there has been 22 Felony just this week alone. According to the New York Census in 2019, there were 7.6% of property crimes city-wide, and East Flatbush had 5,3% of property crimes. Out of 100,000 people, there were 324 people incarcerated of the year 2020, according to the Prison Policy Institute.

Demographics:

In East Flatbush, I could already tell you it’s predominantly a Carribean community. But the NYU Furman Center breaks down each race and household’s financial situation. In 2015-2019 there were 85.8% of Black people,7.6% Hispanic people, 2.5% White people, and 2.3% Asian people.

In terms of household income, there is a majority that makes less than 60,000 dollars a year. Only 47.6% make over 60,000 dollars a year which shows a lower-income community.  The city-wide benchmark for poverty in 2019 is 16%, and East Flatbush is at 9.9%. Rent has gone up so much in the past ten years that 36% of renters use half of their income just to pay rent.

The ages in East Flatbush are vastly different. 31.7% are under the age of 18. 42.9% are under the age of 44, and 25.3% are over the age of 45.

The New York City Department of Education (DOE) operates several public schools in East Flatbush for elementary and middle school education. These schools include P.S. 135 Sheldon A. Brookner School, P.S. 181 Brooklyn, P.S. 269 Nostrand School, and I.S. 211 John Wilson School.
