In 2019, Bedford Stuyvesant had a homeownership rate of 18.4%, which was lower than the city’s overall proportion of 31.9%. Since 2010, the neighborhood’s homeownership rate has dropped by 2.0 percentage points. In 2020, the neighborhood’s owner-occupied 1-4 family homes, condominiums, or cooperative apartments had a home purchase loan rate of 22.4 per 1,000 properties and a refinance loan rate of 46.6 per 1,000 properties. In Bedford Stuyvesant, 0.3% of all loans for first-time homebuyers and 0.6% of all refinance loans were high cost loans. In Bedford Stuyvesant, 179 houses filed for mortgage foreclosure in 2021. On average, 10.2 mortgage foreclosure cases were started for every 1,000 single-family homes and condominiums.
