Topic: Gangs and The War on Drugs in The Bronx
Research question: How has the war on drugs affected the community in the Bronx and which are the social consequences of the war on drugs?
This issue has a huge impact on all of New York, as the war on drugs has been going on for many years. Like many other parts of New York City, the Bronx is one of the counties with the highest rate of drug abuse. Many innocent people have fallen victim to this problem as the war on drugs has created a climate of fear, partly because of the number of murders, but also because of the fear this creates in the community. Nowadays, due to gangs and the war on drugs, there have been so many robberies and murders that many people are afraid to go outside for fear that they or a loved one will be the next to lose their lives. I have witnessed how the community I live in in the Bronx is affected by drug use and gang crime, as every day someone is mugged, shot, or in the worst-case scenario, murdered. I think it’s very important that issues like this are addressed because even though the police are on patrol, they’re not always there to help at the right time.
