Unit 8 (10/16 to 10/22):  Criminalizing and Imprisoning Communities of Color | Real People, Real Lives, Real Implications

Overview

This week, we will be reading Victor Rios’ book Punished. We will analyze and discuss the main ideas from the chapters.

Victor Rios’ book Punished (2011) is a thought-provoking book written by Victor Rios, a professor, and sociologist who explores the issues of youth, race, and the criminal justice system. Rios shares his personal experiences growing up in a challenging neighborhood, becoming involved in gangs, and later transforming his life through education. The book delves into the lives of marginalized young people, particularly young men of color, and examines how social factors such as poverty, racial inequality, and limited opportunities contribute to their entanglement in the criminal justice system.
