Racial/ Ethnic Breakdown 

The neighborhood in which I grew up and reside is Washington heights/ Inwood. According to https://furmancenter.org, it is home to about 216,768 residents. The majority of the ethnic makeup is Hispanics. According to the data last recorded in 2021, the statistics are Hispanic (67.9%), White (19.7%), Black (7.3%) , and Asian (2.7%). As seen in the chart below in comparison to the year 2000 the amount of hispanics and blacks in the neighborhood has decreased, while the population of white people and asian people have increased .

Socioeconomic make-up

According to https://www.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/data/2018chp-mn12.pdf , with data provided from 2018, In Washington Heights/ Inwood the amount of absences within students is lower than the national rate for the city, but the rate of graduation is also lower. In Washington Heights/Inwood the national unemployment rate is higher than the rest of NYC, and about 1/5th of Washington heights/Inwood residents struggle/live in poverty. According to https://furmancenter.org when it comes to household income the average amount of household income for the year 2021 was $58,060, while the average for nyc as a whole was $72,150. This data shows that this neighborhood is a bit poorer compared to the city as a whole.

Age Distribution

The neighborhood is most populated with people ages 30-34 with a population of 3,232. The age group with the least population is the age group of 85 and older,  The Average/ Median age is 33. Females make up most of the population. Compared to men the percentage of the woman population makes up 53.3 % and men make up 46.7%.

Crime Rate Data

Washington Heights is in the confines of the 34th police precinct. The NYPD uses their compstat system to outline the 7 major felonies that occur within the confines of the neighborhood they cover. Based upon their data, the NYPD reported that in 2023 there were 3 murders, 13 rapes, 199 robberies, 320 felonious assaults, 136 burglaries, 515 grand larcenies, and 213 grand larceny autos. In the graph below you can see the increase and decrease of crimes throughout the years.
