Strain Theory

Strain Theory is stressed or strained individuals often become upset and sometimes cope with crime. In this case, the infamous Anna Sorokin came from a middle-class family and struggled to adapt to society she didn’t have it all like other people did and magazines inspired her to become someone else. Instead of doing the dominant cultural way where people get an education and become ambitious to gain wealth, she was innovative and manipulated banks, firms, and people to get what she wanted and live that “American dream” She wasted money like nothing not knowing the consequences. In society, men have it easier to succeed and Anna Sorkin wanted to prove that a woman can also rise to the top. “She stole $200,000 from banks, luxury hotels, restaurants, individuals, and a private jet operator, all while masquerading as an heir to a $67 million trust fund” (Forbes) She didn’t think she was doing anyone harm by doing this and she continued doing this thinking she wouldn’t get caught. We can prevent crime by reducing exposure to the situation, meaning that Anna could have educated herself and be surrounded by people who made her think she could achieve her goal by going through a different route. Also if her parents were a better support system Anna wouldn’t have felt alone and if the government helped the lower class and middle class achieve their goals by providing them with the skills and tools they need.
