Criminology 102
Professor Margaryan
This past week I’ve been following & monitoring The New York Times and viewing what type of crimes were recored and how consist the crimes were. Before doing the research I already had a little knowledge on what most of the crime would consist of which is gun violence. While doing the research i’ve found some shocking things that is going around in NYC not only within the civilians but also within people that holds a medical liscence. After seeing these cases and monitoring i’ve realized that gun violence isn’t the only problems that seem to go unnoticed there are also other problems that goes unnoticed is people with ongoing criminal record, homelessness, and homicide. ive started to notice that a lot of people that have been in & out of the system tends to return to going back to those harmful things they were doing are later arrested and just simply return back out to the world. The thing I found shocking is how the former doctor Stephen P. Miller’s able to still offer his services after his license have been expired and revoked and was caught in scams. Homelessness have been over looked for so long it has always been a problem and have been constantly getting worst and it nice to see the city council finally doing something about it even if the mayor isn’t. The Brent Sikkema case is crazy and sad how ive seen many cases where a person either murder their significant other or pay someone to assassinate them instead of just leaving the relation.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/05/nyregion/former-doctor-manslaughter-aided-suicide.html (Feb.5,2024) A 85 year old former doctor named Stephen P. In New York State Law it is a crime to intentionally cause or aid in a suicide of another person , the women was found in super 8 motel in Kingston, NY around 11:15 am investigators found evidence that a second person was in the room that either contributed to or assisted in the suicide. Mr. Miller lawyer stated that the women was contending with severe, chronic pain and felt she had run out of options for coping with it, Mr.Miller have provided the women with a book and counseling and traveled from Arizona to New York to be witness her death. Mr.Miller lawyer also said that Mr.Miller have provided similar services before to other people on several occasions in the recent years, Later it was shown that Mr.Miller license to practice had expired in 2005, the next year he was convicted on one count of federal tax evasion in Texas in connection with a scheme that involved using limited liability companies and sham trusts to conceal income and move it offshore account and was sentenced four years in federal prison, in 2009 his license in California was revoked due to this case he was also face two assault counts which he pleaded not guilty and was released after $1 million bond was posted.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/14/nyregion/housing-voucher-lawsuit-mayor-adams-legal-aid-city-council.html (Feb.14,2024) Mayor Eric Adams is being sued by legal aid society for not complying with new laws meant to address rising homelessness and the influx of tens of thousands of migrants due to the homelessness crisis overwhelms shelters and the city budget with how both the council and May Eric Adams could manage it have gotten tension between them, the city council is expected to join the legal aid society with sue against Mayor Eric Adams after voting to authorize the lawsuit. The lawsuit hit on the laws on the issue that are a package of bills the Council passed last year in 2023 to make more people eligible for a housing voucher program as record numbers of homeless people entered city shelters. mayor Eric Adams vetoed the legislation, saying it would be too costly. one of the victim of this is Marie Vincent who is a cancer survivor who lives in a shelter in Harlem with her 12-year-old grandson she was evicted from her home in the Bronx last year after a new landlord purchased the property. She earns $42,000 a year as a housekeeper at a hospital but has struggled to find an apartment because her income is above the certain amount to qualify for a voucher under the old guidelines. she stated outside city hall “I would be qualified if Mayor Adams would follow the law and I would be able to secure a new apartment” a councilwoman from the Bronx named perinea Sanchez who is a sponsor of two pieces of the legislative package, stated in an interview that the mayor’s focus on housing supply was shortsighted and his implication that the vouchers might be abused was “poverty shaming.”
