Welcome to Week 12!

Dear students,

We are forging ahead with the rest of the semester. In the four weeks, we have left we need to accomplish quite a bit. This week, we are discussing Social Control theories. Find all study materials in Week 12 unit and participate in the discussion forum on the role of afterschool activities in reducing delinquency.

Short Assignment #3 is due this week. Please make sure to follow the instruction in the assignment. You should add it as a “student work” post. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Exam 3 will be live the week after Thanksgiving (December 1st). I have attached the questions for Exam 3 on the bottom of the Week 12 unit (scroll to the bottom).

This week I am traveling to a conference, so I will not have any face-to-face office hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Instead, I have office hours on Monday, from 12 pm to 3 pm. I will be in my office and on ZOOM: https://bmcc-cuny.zoom.us/j/3772687009

Welcome to Week 10!

Dear students,

The second exam is behind us. I will grade it shortly.

We are in Week 10 of the semester, and the topic for this week is the Social Disorganization Theory which was developed by scholars at the Chicago School. The focus of this theory is on the neighborhoods and communities, rather than persons. Learn all about Social Disorganization Theory in Week 10 unit. Also, participate in the discussion forum on how to organize communities and neighborhoods through arts.

Exam 2 is behind us, and I will grade it shortly. If you are missing either one of the short assignments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me for help. I have my office hours today and on Tuesday/Thursday.

Welcome to Week 8!

Dear students,

We are in the Eighth Week of the Semester. We will be focusing on the contributions of W.E.B. Du Bois in criminology. While he is not customarily identified as a criminologist, but many of his writings included discussions about crime. Study the materials in Unit Week 8 and participate in the discussion.

We are a week away from Exam 2. I will post Exam 2 questions by Wednesday. It will be live on Thursday, October 17th on Blackboard. You will have until October 30th to complete the exam.

I am excited to read your Short Assignment #2 submissions. I will grade them at the beginning of this week! You have a tiny break until Short Assignment #3 is due. If you haven’t submitted either one of the first two assignments, don’t despair and post them. Here is a great YouTube video on how to insert images in posts in OpenLab (and any WordPress site).

Welcome to Week 6!

Dear students,

We are nicely proceeding into the semester. I hope that your experience so far has been satisfactory in this online Criminology. Exam 1 is behind us and so is Short Assignment #1. I have provided feedback to those students who submitted their posts. They can update their posts to get a better grade. If you have not submitted your first short assignment, you can do it now.

I will grade Exam 1 shortly. I hope it was not a stressful exam. The other three exams will follow the exact structure of the first one.

This week we are focusing on biological explanations of criminal behavior. This is a fascinating field of study and one of the oldest in Criminology. We will learn about the early biological theories (most discredited) and more modern explorations of how our biology might influence our involvement in crime. You can learn all about it by going to Week 6 unit. There is an interesting discussion forum for this week involving craniometry and facial recognition.

I will be posting a video about Short Assignment 2. Please make sure to watch it so you can understand how to do it. The deadline for this assignment is October 16th.

I will have my office hours this week on Monday and Thursday. I have my virtual office hours today starting at 1 pm for an hour. You can find me here:

On Thursday, I will be back on campus, and my office hours are from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. Stop by at N656 or see me on ZOOM using the link above.

Welcome to Week 2!

Dear students,

In our second week of class, we will attempt to understand deeper what we mean when we talk about crime. We will also define criminology as a discipline and go over multiple ways we can approach crime from theoretical perspectives. Criminology is the science of crime and criminal behavior. We will explore the history and emergence of criminology and outline how the field has continued to develop. Please study the materials in Week 2 unit and participate in the discussion. You should also be working on Short Assignment 1, which is due on September 25th.

I will have my office hours this week today and Thursday, in the morning. Stop by my office, N656. Or email me to find a mutually convenient ZOOM meeting time.

Welcome to Week 1 of Fall2022!

Dear students,

This is the start of our first week of Criminology online for Fall 2022. We are about to embark on an exciting journey together learning various theories in criminology, pondering about the definitions of a crime, and looking into crime statistics.

I am here to help you navigate your journey. This is an asynchronous online class which means that we don’t have regularly scheduled ZOOM classes. Instead, you will go learn on your own but I will be always available to help you. I am available during my office hours: Mondays 1 pm -2 pm on ZOOM Thursdays 9:45 am to 10:45 am pm in person (Office N656, 199 Chambers). I can also schedule a different online meeting if the times don’t work for you. Finally, you can email me or text me: Phone: 212 776 6391
Email: smargaryan@bmcc.cuny.edu

There is a Week 1 unit posted as well as the discussion forum for introductions. Many have already started their introductions. Please go and participate.

I will post a video later today showing you how to navigate OpenLab and talk about the assignments and other considerations.

I look forward to seeing your contributions and perhaps even meeting you in person or online!
