assignment 4

Traffic stops don’t accomplish their task of deterring unsafe driving. I know multiple people who have gotten stopped because of tinted windows, or because of the type of car they were driving in certain neighborhoods. Theres a lot of racial profiling that happens when a traffic stop is made. According to The Guardian US police have killed nearly 600 people in traffic stops. Its safe to say that traffic stops don’t deter unsafe driving. I don’t believe completely banning traffic stops is the answer either I believe they just need better protocol, and when to actually make traffic stops.

Short Assignment #3

Ear Hustling

Tommy Shakur Ross was seduced by what he saw as the “glamour” of gang life, he’s still in jail from the 80s. Shakur Ross being seduced from what he saw as “glamour” in gang life would fit more in the differential association theory. Differential association theory assumes that criminal behavior is learned in interaction with other persons. There was something he saw when he was around the other gang members that made him think gang life was so amazing.

Crime Prevention In My Neighborhood

camera on neighbor’s house

In my neighborhood we don’t have much city crime prevention, as in NYPD cameras, or an NYPD watch tower so we have to protect ourselves from crime. Most of my neighbors have camera facing the direction in which a person can enter their property, pretty sure they’re watching me take pictures of their cameras too.

Short Assignment #1

For this assignment, I followed the coverage of crimes in SI Live. Throughout the week, there were a number of stories about crime published there. Here is the list of stories:

This article states that former mayor Rudy Giuliani owes his ex wife $260,000 due to their divorce settlement and he has yet to pay, he has also missed his court hearing, he is contempt of court and has to pay by October 7th, if not he could be arrested. Giuliani states she exaggerated how much he makes, he owes her money but not that much. He also claims he has no income and is being sued by other people.

This article states that Shaeem Chavis, recently released from prison (March 2021) shot his grandmother in the head and shot someone else, a man, in the shoulder. He is being charged with murder, first-degree assault, criminal possession of a loaded firearm and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The police think the shooting had something to do with narcotics. He was previously in prison for killing a cab driver when he was 16.

This article states, Tyese Hansberry a care giver threw the 81 year old lady she was supposed to be taking care of on the ground by her shoulders. It stated that they were arguing and that Hansberry grabbed the elderly woman by her shoulders and threw her to the ground, the elderly woman was transported to the hospital in stable conditions. Hansberry is being charged with assault, endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person and harassment.

This article states, Daniel Gill is suing the city alleging he was wrongfully arrested. Three months ago he was arrested while working in Shop Rite, because he tapped the former mayor Rudy Giuliani and called him a scum bag, he was arrested then for assaulting the former mayor by backslapping him. in the video you see Gill tap Giuliani on the back to get his attention. they dropped the charges down to misdemeanor counts of assault and menacing, and a non-criminal violation of harassment, which then prosecutors on agreed to have the case adjourned in contemplation of dismissal. Now, Gill is suing the city for being wrongfully arrested.
