Welcome to Week 12!

Dear students,

We are forging ahead with the rest of the semester. In the four weeks, we have left we need to accomplish quite a bit. This week, we are discussing Social Control theories. Find all study materials in Week 12 unit and participate in the discussion forum on the role of afterschool activities in reducing delinquency.

Short Assignment #3 is due this week. Please make sure to follow the instruction in the assignment. You should add it as a “student work” post. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Exam 3 will be live the week after Thanksgiving (December 1st). I have attached the questions for Exam 3 on the bottom of the Week 12 unit (scroll to the bottom).

This week I am traveling to a conference, so I will not have any face-to-face office hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Instead, I have office hours on Monday, from 12 pm to 3 pm. I will be in my office and on ZOOM: https://bmcc-cuny.zoom.us/j/3772687009

  1. After-school programs are a great way to get kids more involved in my personal opinion. They help with Extracurricular activities and homework. These programs help students who do not have enough support at home. Many students are going to school to have a better education but there is social/emotional support also at school for them. And with an after-school program being available for students on Saturdays helps them to stay more focused and education and the extra support that child may need. Every child has a different skill/personality and challenges with an after-school program students can have potential community support. The article shows evidence that after school can benefit from after school. “ … regardless of their language, regardless of their background, knows how to get to his school …. And so our concept is how do we contrato make the school the central point for families, parents, students and the community as a whole .” Having an after-school program will also mean that students will learn more about different cultures and engage in more activities.
